Violectric HPA V550 PRO Headphone Amplifier $2799 Review

The balanced amplifier circuit is a variation of the 2009 design, although it is now compatible with lower impedance loads. The PRE-GAIN stage implemented in the Violectric headphone amplifiers ensures not only a low noise floor, but also precise control of output levels due to the ability to tailor the sensitivity of the pre-amplifier stage. The volume control is an impressive piece of engineering, as the ability to execute a 256-step volume control with .4 dB increments is nothing short of amazing. Finally, the HPA V550 PRO is a solidly designed preamplifier, and can function equally well in a traditional two channel audio system. If you are searching for a high-performance headphone amplifier then give the Violectric HPA VM550 PRO serious consideration, as there are very few products in the audio world that are built to this level of sophistication.

Gold Note Mediterraneo Review

The resident orchestra of Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw performing Beethoven’s Symphony No.6 under the baton of Bernard Haitink is a recording in which the string section enjoys exceptional sweetness. The Mediterraneo dutifully captures the delightful string tones during the quieter sections, while the majestic swells possess a wonderful acoustic ambience without ever sounding strident or harsh. This recording is notable for its lack of pinpoint imaging, but the orchestra sounds just as I would imagine it in the hall, ranged across a wide concert stage without undue spotlighting of individual instruments. Despite this, a little fine detail is lost to the warm euphony of the deck’s presentation.

CHORD ELECTRONICS ULTIMA 5 STEREO POWER AMPLIFIER REVIEW

June 9, 2021 Comments Off on CHORD ELECTRONICS ULTIMA 5 STEREO POWER AMPLIFIER REVIEW

Chord Electronics ULTIMA 5 stereo power amplifier

In short, then, the Chord Electronics’ ULTIMA 5 is monumentally capable. It has a reasonably uncommon combination of on-paper promise (all that innovative engineering, all those colossal numbers), visual drama (especially if you’re into the whole steampunk/Alan Moore aesthetic) and implacable performance that makes the asking price look as if entirely reasonable. It certainly doesn’t make any demands of you in terms of the type of music you prefer to listen to; the ULTIMA 5 plays no favourites and is as happy to explain the motivations of a king-sized symphony orchestra in full attack mode, as it is those of a rapper with a sampler and an 808.

on the left. The IEM looks really nice and I quite liked it.

Build quality is very good as well, as the earpieces are unibody including the nozzles. The sound bores are cut nicely too, and the faceplate closing is perfect. However, the recessed 2-pin sockets could’ve designed better with a deeper fit. It’s a recessed design but it’s actually not fully recessed so the cable connectors move slightly. It’s not a big deal, but I think they can improve that with a fully recessed design all the way down.

I had been invited by the late Peter J. Walker of Quad to record this performance by his local orchestra accompanying no fewer than 200 singers in England’s Ely Cathedral, in a performance celebrating the 50th anniversary of the composer’s death. I was eagerly anticipating making the recording in the cathedral’s superbly supportive acoustic and had scoped out what I felt would be the optimal position for Calrec’s then-new Soundfield single-point microphone. Using the controller for the microphone’s four capsules, I was able to synthesize a crossed, coincident pair of figure-8 microphones to make the stereo recording. However, when I arrived to set up my gear, the cathedral staff insisted that I had to place the microphone 12′ above conductor Christopher Brown’s head.

McIntosh C53 Preamplifier and MCT500 SACD/CD Transport Review

So that I don’t come out sounding like a complete spoilsport when it comes to my earlier broadside against superhero movies, my 14-year-old daughter has become quite the fan of Marvel Comics and the movies made from them. During the pandemic she watched them all, and I will confess to having a good time joining her for some of these, notably Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which is filled with more action and CGI than any ten movies can handle. The sound work is genuinely sensational, which is exactly the way it sounded with the soundtrack routed through my two-channel setup: everything clear, clean, well separated and registered, with dynamic range wider than can be comfortably accommodated in a domestic setting—during some of the battle scenes the detonations were such as to make me happy our house is anchored to its foundation. And, yes, I confess, very dramatic, very exciting, very entertaining, and no, never once did we miss back channels.
