“Five years or so ago, the brave new world of computer audio grew up into hi-fi separates with hard-disk drives inside. Products from companies like Brennan, Cambridge Audio and Yamaha offered instant playback of computer files from standalone boxes. Then streamers appeared, and the whole industry began to rally around this model. Sony’s HAP-S1 (and its bigger HAP-Z1ES brother) are the first to elegantly combine the two technologies, giving the best of both worlds. It works rather like a 21st century CD jukebox, offering instant music, and plenty of it – but it seamlessly integrates with your computer and its music library via your home network. In my view, this is a brilliant solution.”

“What is interesting about EarSonics is that it has a clear house brand and their product line-up all fit within a certain image as well as having a particular house sound. This shows that a lot a thought is put into each product and EarSonics have certainly developed a cohesive range of unique IEMs for their customers”

” Explorer 2 includes a powerful decoder and audio renderer for Meridian’s exclusive ‘Master Quality Authenticated’ system. ” The new ZX2 “High Resolution Walkman” is supposed to hit at around $1,200 for what is, essentially, a digital audio player. As in, it’s an iPod. Without most of the non-audio flexibility that the iPod actually has. Hmm.”

” Before I discuss my auditioning of these two speakers, fig.1 compares their anechoic responses on the tweeter axis at 50″, averaged across a 30° horizontal window and with the complex sum of the woofer and port nearfield responses plotted below 300Hz. (I used DRA Labs’ MLSSA system and a calibrated DPA 4006 microphone.) The blue trace is the KEF, the red trace the Revel. ”

Let’s face it, channel exclusivity of power supplies can be built into a stereo chassis. But because reality bites, there’ll be practical constraints on size, weight and heat dissipation. Size and weight don’t just inform the consumer side about what’s manageable. It affects manufacturing and shipping too. With class A bias throwing off 90% of generated power as heat; and transformers getting bigger and heavier as power ratings escalate; what’s doable in a stereo chassis does eventual hit limits of plain common sense.”
