” Streaming a 24/96 FLAC of Mark Knopfler’s Privateering via this setup shows that it doesn’t feel the pressure when partnered with kit picked from a few rungs further up the audiophile ladder. While I can clearly hear the contribution of the MF amps as they drive my speakers with greater authority than the Sony’s inbuilt amp can muster, the quality of its hi-res DAC shines through”

” The Aria software comes with 18 metadata fields that you can use to describe your recordings; you can add as many other fields as you wish, or delete any you don’t need. Be aware that most CD-ripping programs and most download sites probably won’t automatically fill in these fields for you. The Aria’s ripping program does populate those fields as best it can, and it did a pretty good job. It has access to the AccurateRip database used by dBpoweramp, and the premium databases AMG, freedb, GD3, MusicBrainz, and SonataDB (Classical) — you’ll have a hard time finding a CD the Aria won’t recognize. You may recognize some of those databases as commercial, but worry not — the Aria comes with licenses for their use.

” The overall sound, octave to octave, is very linear with no highlighting of any small frequency range. Notes flow up and down the scale properly, and in correct relative proportion to other frequency ranges. The Prime does not sound warm or cool, just neutral with a touch of liveliness that does not include any hint of harshness or overreaching brightness.”

” ’m a bit of a bass-hound, so if I was in the market to purchase a pair of Martin Logan’s ElectroMotion ESLs I would add a sub, but in truth if I had the cash, I’d go for one of the company’s bigger (and reputedly even better) speakers. That said, these floorstanders are gobsmackingly good, and have the kind of beautifully detailed sound image that a hi-fi seeker-of-audio-truth could easily end up forking out 20 to 30 grand for.

” When I asked McNair what are the “ingredients” of a great-sounding album, he said, “Starting with the most important, it’s the songs, the musicians, the production, the mixer, the recording engineer, and in last place, the mastering.” McNair’s resume includes credits as a producer, mixer, recording and mastering engineer”

” It really does feel perfect to me though, especially with the beautiful Minerva leather case. I do have a very small criticism of the volume pot though. It feels a little bit flimsy, a bit weak and easy. This phenomenon is often referred to as knob feel and it is something that I think everyone will understand. This knob feel just isn’t right for me I would like it a touch stiffer and a bit more solid. That would be perfect!”
