“Build quality is solid but not fancy. Knock the top plate with your knuckle and it clonks in a rather uninspiring way, but it’s purpose is to protect you from it and vice versa, nothing more. Lift the amp up, however, and you may be surprised at how heavy it is. The ironwork must be extremely dense, which means that the whole thing is pretty much theft proof. I like the aluminium face plate and the low profile nature of the chassis”

” I have found that the HD800 paired with the Nordost Heimdall balanced cable to be incredibly revealing. The V281 used at the factory default gain setting was extremely neutral as there was no tipped presence in either the midrange or treble. The V281 actually has a similar sound signature to the V200. The character of the amplifier was smooth and the background was silent. There was definitely no unwanted noise or grunge coming from the V281.”

Using my Arcam irDAC with both, I found that the Hegel was ruler-flat in its treble response, with an airy, extended sound with which I could easily explore the upper-frequency boundaries of every recording. The Octave, on the other hand, sounded a touch recessed, tending to focus more on the musical performance itself, and less on the recording venue. Two types of sound that will appeal to two types of listener, I suspect, and that will vary depending on the recording.”
