” that’s going some for any 16/44 converter, so horrible is this digital disc; Joe Boyd’s puritanical production (think the opposite of Duran Duran’s lavish soundscapes) full of ringing Rickenbackers isn’t easy to get right. But the song bounces along; tonal balance is even and the piercing guitar work doesn’t grate as much as feared.”

” I drove those speakers with much less power than what I have on hand today, and also used a tubed preamp. For many years, horns have been thought to be best coupled with tube electronics. How would the Canterbury GR sound with extremely high power solid-state electronics? Nonetheless, I assumed that Tannoy expected many users to be using solid-state electronics in today’s environment.”

“This is Class D technology and I am well aware that it has its detractors, but what Bruno Putzey (the designer of the Hypex modules) has done with the NC1200 is take the Class D technology of the UcD circuit developed in 2001 and transformed it into a truly audiophile component. What Merrill have then done is implement this technology in a pair of amplifiers that make the most of what the modules can do. ”

” Another aspect of a speaker’s phase performance is its imaging and depth perspective, and again it scores highly. Spatially it’s a wide and expansive performer, which – although lacking the sheer vastness of a large panel loudspeaker – manages to sound far less shut in than some conventional rivals.”

“This combination of transparency and resolution without etch that defines the brand was readily apparent in all three Inspiration products. I have so much experience with Constellation that there was no mistaking the Inspiration’s crystalline transparency and openness for anything else. This see-through quality didn’t just allow me to hear instruments in the back of the hall or deep into a multitrack mix; it also conveyed an impression of immediacy, of the air in which the instruments exist being “charged” with the life and vitality of the hall or studio.

“In the case of the Sony Walkman, I think it’s a bit more black and white. Basically, what it comes down to is how particular you are about sound quality. If your attitude is blasé (shame on you), then just use your phone, save the $300, and be done with it. If your tastes are more discerning, then I’d say the Sony is worth your time. While $300 is certainly not something you’ll find in your couch, considering the price of the competition, it’s a relative bargain.”

” Owing to Final Audio’s ‘Balanced Air Movement’, the Heaven VIII accomplishes a quantity of bass hard to find in other balanced-armature IEMs, especially those with single drivers. Lows are full and articulate with a great sense of dynamism and realistic decay which contribute nicely to instrumental music.”
