“They have licensed the High-Res Audio logo to Qobuz. But the JAS isn’t in the business of checking whether a site or a company actually meets the specifications. They specifically absolve themselves from any responsibility by including the following on their “Definition of Hi-Res Audio Products” document.”

” Tapping into a more full fledge luxury vibe, the new flagship Neolith ($80k) from Martin and Logan barely fit into their room on the 4th floor. I have to admit the monolith-like Neolith had quite the sexy presentation regardless. I loved the blue hue, but the sales representative told me that it can also be colored to any classic car hue. So if you owned a candy red Lamborghini in your youth, you can recreate that awesomeness with a speaker finish and soak in the memories as you listen to Mozart from the 48″ x 22″ CLS XStat electrostatic high/mid driver and two woofers (15″ rear-firing and 12″ front facing). No word yet as to if they will do the “dirty Dodge Omni white” from my youth.”

” The low of of the 1RNC is moderately potent with good firmness factor, but it isn’t nearly as interesting as its little brother’s bass ( the 950BT ). It is a nice, neutral ground experience that can thump hard, as well as be polite when the track calls for it. What bugs me is the neutral tone, I prefer a slower, more weighted bass than the harder, firm and fast hitting sound the 1R series offers. Testing with the TEB Bassgasm Bass Test proves the headphone can hit harder and deeper than most, but it doesn’t respond well to EQ boosting and remains generally the same from +1dB to +5dB.”

” That’s why most upper-end products come with some carved-from-solid brick, generally littered with tiny identical buttons and so heavy it risks damaging whatever you put it down on. To me, that’s just dumb, but hey, somewhere along the line, weight and quality seem to have become equated. These things are crazy expensive to make and just like fancy Swiss watches, you can buy a plastic alternative that actually works just as well.”

” Another critical point about setup: A speaker this good and precise requires very careful setup to get the best trade-off in frequency response, soundstaging, and detail. Getting the best out of the Hailey means experimenting with placement and the finer details of toe-in and tilt. A really good dealer is going to spend at least an hour or two getting the floor position, speaker tilt and height, and fine-tuning of the listening position right. I suspect, however, that most serious audiophiles are going to spend several more weeks refining final adjustments to their taste.”

” Which is to say: if you like bright treble (not to mention mids that kowtow to it), and a good, compact, anchoring bass, Donguri probably will grease your pole. But if you don’t go in for that stuff, it certainly won’t. Even if you’re like me, and do, you may have trouble with American hip hop, which really needs a lazier upper end, and if possible, a bit less detail and a bit more fluffy pressure in the low end.”
