“This is a popular combo, and for good reason—the ESS DACs are found in some VERY high-end designs, while the XMOS chipset is probably the most reliable USB solution I’ve encountered. It’s got very mature drivers making for a hassle-free experience. And it allows the DAC-10H to accept signals as high as 384kHz for PCM or quad rate for DSD, aka DSD256. Not that you’ll find much in the way of material recorded in those lofty formats, but it’s nice to have all the bases covered for future-proofing.”

” As mentioned, this is quite a natural sounding player with no real bloom anywhere that I can spot. I do find things lacking on the low end in terms of quantity on a subjective level though, again due to that lack of an EQ, but the Calyx M also offers a bit of an interesting texture to the bass as well. ”

” At $1,495 the Continental Dual Mono is the most expensive portable amp/dac combo I have ever reviewed. But with portable players beginning to hit the $3.5 mark the move seemed almost inevitable. It adds just the right amount of fun to the mix without ever being overbearing or colored. It is feature rich in all the right places and leaves very little else on the table. The included stock tubes feel right on the money but allow for tube rollers to fine tune the device to their heart’s content. If the CDM falls in your price range suit up, grab yourself a pair of respectable headphones and lose yourself in the music. The best is only going to continue to get better. “

” That ability to start and stop sounds on a dime, which I alluded to with the music selections, shone through in spades with the Daredevil soundtrack. Because the titular character Matt Murdock/Daredevil is blind, his superpowers involve super-hearing. In a number of scenes, when Daredevil focuses his hearing, this is demonstrated by taking a large canvas of sound–like a gritty New York street traffic scene–and fading to hone in on a single sound, like an innocent victim’s cry for help. In the broad scene, the Prime Satellites did a great job of capturing individual elements like cars honking, people shouting, etc., while also keeping the whole scene as a coherent picture. ”

“All that combined with the tube touch of the Trio makes the sound not only very detailed but very musical as well. I immensely enjoyed this pairing with a lot of different musical styles and I’m convinced you’ll love it too. In fact, I liked the Hifiman pairing so much I dug out the good old discontinued HE-500. Again, Trio performed with excellence and the HE-500 at high gain sounded sublime. I do hope Hifiman would bring out a more comfortable headphone with the HE-500 tuning, ”
