Sumiko S.9 Subwoofer Reviewed

” So I hooked up the Denon receiver and the Revel F206s, and I set the Denon’s subwoofer crossover to the industry-standard 80 Hz. The R-115W delivered powerful, clean bottom end, but it wasn’t blending perfectly with the Revels; the mid and upper bass lacked punch and definition. I swapped in my big Hsu Research VTF-15H; and, while the VTF-15H’s extensive tuning capabilities let me get a better blend with the Revels, I wasn’t quite satisfied. Then I tried substituting the S.9, and everything fell into place. The S.9 picked up right where the main speakers left off and sounded more like part of the system than like a separate subwoofer.”

SPL Phonitor Mini – Review

” For reference, I always use my HA-1 from Oppo. I know it isn’t the best DAC/Amp in the tier, but it is the most useful and jam packed with features that make life so very easy for a reviewer. It is also a great flat line, benchmarking tool to compare other products against. When I compared it with the Phonitor Mini by connecting the two together, you can hear an audible downgrade in clarity and dynamics”

Ayre Acoustics MX-R Twenty monoblock power amplifier – Review

“Classical double bassists were served equally well by the Ayre MX-R Twenty. I used to love the music of Sibelius, but hadn’t played any for too long a time. I reached for Symphony 5, with Herbert von Karajan conducting the Berlin Philharmonic (ALAC files ripped from CD, EMI Studio CDM 7 69244 2). To underpin the work’s ambiguous tonality, halfway through the finale Sibelius has the double basses, normally used by composers to provide a solid foundation to the harmony taking place above, playing divisi two notes that “fight,” E-flat and F. With regular systems, the listener is aware that there is something “sour” in the apparently muddy sound of the basses at this point”

WOO AUDIO 234 $15,000 – REVIEW

” So who is this Woo for? $15,900 is a mighty sum, and if you want better tubes, the price gets pricier. In fact, if you want the full compliment of tubes you’ll be coming perilously close to the $20k mark. However, the Woo Audio 234 is one of the most impeccably-made amplifiers I’ve ever seen (or heard). Each one is built by hand in Woo’s workshop in New York to exhaustingly precise standards and tolerances. The 234 monobloc is unapologetically a Statement component from Woo Audio. Because they are integrated designs, you won’t need a preamp, and this increases the value proposition. Still, at somewhere between $18k and $19k for the full setup, we’re still talking a very serious sum. But let’s put some perspective on this.”

MUSIC FIRST AUDIO BABY REFERENCE V2 £6,120 REVIEW

“The more I listen to this preamp, the more convincing it sounds. The fact that there is no electronic amplification going on gives it a major advantage; no grunge in means no grunge out. I tried it with amplifiers from Linn, Gamut, ATC, and the Class D examples fitted to PMC twotwo 6 active monitors. I tried both single-ended and XLR cables, including 5m examples of the latter for the PMCs. Nothing seems to phase the MFA, and everything seems to benefit from its grain free immediacy… not least being the listener himself.

AIR FORCE TWO TURNTABLE £28,898 REVIEW

August 10, 2015 Comments Off on AIR FORCE TWO TURNTABLE £28,898 REVIEW

http://goo.gl/jRqjHW Read Here

” Most of all, though, the Air Force Two shines thanks to the absolute authority it imposes on the music, and yet it’s not so authoritarian as to refuse to allow the music to let its hair down a little. Even complex polyrhythms, such as found in the intrinsically funky West Cost big band meets ska in ‘Footprints’ from the Jazz Jamaica All Stars Massive Vol.1 [Gearbox], are not an issue here. The Air Force Two’s absolute (yet not clinical) precision snaps the album into sharp focus, letting those Zappa-esque vibrophone runs play on beautifully.”
