Woo Audio WA7d Fireflies Headphone Amplifier and DAC Review

Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 is my favorite of the nine symphonies he composed. The last movement, in particular, has a melody that everyone would recognize. It sounded truly beautiful on the Woo WA7d. In particular, the basso profundo (person singing the bass line), sounded like he was standing next to me. And, when the full symphony was playing, the whole spectrum was crystal clear, with each instrument detectable. That is a tribute to both the amplifier and the headphones, which use a thin film as the driver (planar-magnetic).
CHORD HUGO – REVIEW

“The proof is in the listening, which of course is critical. But guess what else is highly important? Being able to comfortably use the thing. And that’s where I feel, for all the technical advances involved, Chord’s Hugo doesn’t live up to its full potential. It’s just not intuitive by any stretch of the imagination. The first thing you notice is the rather unusual volume wheel that glows different colors to indicate levels. Green is louder than yellow, and blue is louder still, while red is quiet and white is full-scale (and might wreck your IEMs). Got that? There’s a glowing circle that indicates sample rate — if you consider that info critical, plan on memorizing all 9 colors, each corresponding to a different rate. Then there’s the window allowing us to see three very small LEDs on the PCB. One shows battery levels. Another indicates which input is active.
AudioQuest NightHawk Headphones – Review

“The NightHawk passed classical music with a top rating, but what about rockin’ out? 10cc’s The Original Soundtrack (ALAC file, [Mobile Fidelity CD UDCD 729]) opens with “One Night in Paris,” an amazing little one-act rock opera about the streets of Paris and the prurient pleasures they can offer. It has all sorts of sonic challenges, such as a rock-solid piano, delicate tambourine hits, and vocal pyrotechnics. Duran Duran’s Astronaut (ALAC file, [Epic EK 92900]) is steelier, with a lot of imaginative synthesizer effects and booming bass. The NightHawk presented both recordings without flaw or artifice, with lots of energy and that great soundstage.”

“The top end isn’t the sweetest around and veers towards thinness on occasion, but partner these speakers with smooth sources and amplification – probably of the valve variety – and this won’t be an issue.

“We did not experience Death By Powerpoint, as Marc’s opening presentation was quick yet informative, and he mentioned one aspect of their design process that DIY hobbyists and more competent design engineers should recognize. If you build a piece of audio gear solely adhering to abstract specs, such as “flat frequency response,” the result may be subjectively unacceptable. A smart designer combines subjective listening with objective measurement to arrive at the final solution.”

” When I was done evaluating the speakers in my media room, I took the opportunity to also evaluate them in my family room. My purpose was twofold. First, I was curious what differences I’d hear in this open-space environment with limited speaker-placement options, and I was curious to compare them to my trusty 15-year-old Monitor Audio speakers. ”

“Whilst a nice achievement, Bruno had just gotten started thinking outside the box. He realized that the negative attitude audiophiles hold about negative feedback had nothing to with feedback per se. It had to do with the amount of feedback applied and how linear or not it operated across the bandwidth. Classical negative feedback goes heavy on the low frequencies and decreases as frequencies rise to create distorted treble which caused the bad audiophile rep we’ve all heard about. Bruno’s next goal became a circuit that would exploit feedback in a new even more effective way and thus would apply it also equally across the audible range.”
