KEF R400b Subwoofer $1,700 Review

” When I was confident that the R400b could perform well in my reference multichannel system, I hooked it up to a two-channel system via the preamplifier outputs of a NuPrime IDA-8 integrated amplifier-DAC that powered a pair of Definitive Technology StudioMonitor 45 bookshelf speakers. I was able to get a smooth transition from sub to satellites with only some relatively simple fine-tuning of the subwoofer’s controls and minor adjustments to placement, so that the bass was now evenly distributed between the two speakers and throughout the room.”

World Premiere! Linear Tube Audio microZOTL 2.0 Headphone Amplifier Review

” The microZOTL 2.0’s sonics impressed me from day one. I listened to many different types of music throughout the audition period, most of it at about the same volume. Finding the volume’s sweet spot was easy using the microZOTL 2.0’s smooth running volume. It didn’t seem to matter that the volume control isn’t indented because each time I went to listen to headphones it was usually set at the correct volume. If I switched to another headphone with a different sensitivity level, re-setting the level was no big deal since the microZOTL was able to accommodate any headphone I was using at the time. ”

SVS • Prime Tower Loudspeakers $1000 Review

“Compared to my Paradigm Reference Studio 100 v3s, which when new in 2005 sold for $2300 a pair, the SVS Prime Towers showed both their limitations and their strengths. No one in his right mind would expect the Prime Towers to match the Studio 100 v3s, which have more drivers and are bigger in size and internal volume. The Paradigms went lower, with more cleanliness and weight, had a clearer midrange, and a top end that extended far beyond the level of my aural ability to track. But the Prime Towers weren’t all that far behind. They had enough depth on the bottom end to satisfy, they had better-than-expected midrange cleanliness, good detail retrieval and dynamic range, and enough top-end detail and air to keep me listening. The Prime Towers demonstrated that they come far closer to the Paradigms than I’d gone into this review thinking they would, and they showed what can happen to preconceived notions if one is open-minded.”

Elekit TU-HP02 REVIEW

As usual, the sound quality evaluation starts with some basic measurements. As far as RMAA’s result goes, TU-HP02’s noise, dynamic range and stereo crosstalk number are pretty good and close to the reference O2. As expected, intermodulation distortion and total harmonic distortion are both noticeably higher due to the purposefully implemented tube-like distortion circuit, though the number are still below the 1% threshold. Frequency response is flat from 20Hz to 20kHz. Output impedance is calculated at 1.4 ohm, which is fairly low. Plenty of current output which means it should have no problem driving even very low impedance headphone. All and all, the numbers look quite solid.

At $15,000 It’s not an inexpensive Amplifier but I feet its performance is comparable to much costlier reference quality amps I ended up buying the review sample. It was too good to let go.

Kingsound KS-H3, M-20 & M-03 – Electrostatic Glow

My first concern for these is the build quality. Although they are at the entry level pricing for electrostatics, in the bigger picture these are still higher end headphone equipment, especially the M-20 at almost two grand US. The headphones themselves are very light, which is only a good thing when wearing but looking closer at the build quality it does not ooze that premium of similar priced equipment, not the Audeze EL-8 (regardless of whether I actually like the sound of it), ZMF Blackwood (which is DIY to an extent) or any number of Sennheiser models from the HD600 upwards.

The claimed battery life is, again, 40 hours of music playback, eight hours of videos. We clock up the hours over the course of four days and are still left with 15 per cent of juice remaining.

Pioneer’s new HD audio player Review

October 22, 2015 Comments Off on Pioneer’s new HD audio player Review

A Pioneer spokesperson described the new music player as “for those who feel smartphones aren’t offering satisfying sound quality”. And the XDP does seem likely to surpass the average top-of-the-range smartphone in this regard, thanks to support for numerous audio formats including lossless FLAC, MQA, ALAC and DSD audio up to 11.2MHz. The metal body also houses two circuit boards, which the company says will help “eliminate the effects of digital noise” by keeping the audio components on one and the regular processor on the other.
