” The last two selections, at least for that evening, were the Michael Tilson Thomas Mahler Symphony No. 4 and Honneger’s Symphony No. 2 on a London recording, both on vinyl. I am among a (probably) small minority of listeners that find the Tilson Thomas Mahler recordings to suffer from a bit of digititis; by this I mean a bleaching/diminution of harmonics and overtones in conjunction with a subtle hardening at some frequencies. With the EMM Labs MTRX, the upper strings could get a bit grainy when pushed and the lower strings lacked a bit of richness and warmth; however, the detail was phenomenal.:

The Chameleon Ts’ revealing quality and ability to re-create an atmosphere were especially apparent when I listened to Jeff Buckley’s Live at Sin-é (CD, Columbia/Legacy C2K 89202). Recorded in two afternoons in the summer of 1993, the two discs of this Legacy edition are more than worth the price of admission, even for casual Buckley fans. Even as an emerging artist, Buckley’s performances were masterful, and here he commands the attention of his audience with a captivating measure of self-assurance. What makes the album extra-special is the quality of the recording, which does an excellent job of capturing the ambiance and atmosphere of the NYC café. The Chameleon Ts did a fine job of transporting me to Sin-é: I could clearly hear the bustle of the bistro, the random clinks of glassware, the chattering of the crowd — it all convincingly conveyed the feeling of what it might have been like to sit in the audience for those shows.”

Hifiman HE-400S Review

” The liquid vocals are a highlight listening to the 400S. Liquid in this case, means naturalness in the vocals and being unimpeded by other elements of the headphone and their frequencies. They have tremendous detail to each vowel that it makes it a joy to split apart what the artist is singing and bathe in their pronunciation ”

Sunfire XTEQ12 Subwoofer Reviewed

” It’s worth noting that, at 63 and 50 Hz, the subwoofer’s distortion was relatively low; total harmonic distortion (THD, including in this case the second through fifth distortion harmonics) was 9.6 and 5.5 percent, respectively, with the second sample. Typically, I might see numbers more like 15 to 25 percent THD here. That probably sounds like a lot because we’re all used to seeing THD quoted for amplifiers, but for a sub even 10 percent THD is usually just barely audible. So the limiter keeps the XTEQ12’s distortion low and probably prolongs the life of the driver and passive radiator, but it may be preventing the sub from delivering the dynamic peaks that a less conservatively designed product can achieve.”

Arcam FMJ P49 power amplifier review

” As the P49 has a class-G output stage, I monitored its output voltage during one of my listening sessions using the YGA speakers. At my usual listening levels, with Steely Dan’s Gaucho (24/96 ALAC files transcoded from FLAC, MCA B0000868-36/HDtracks) peaking at 90dB (Studio Six iPhone app, Fast, C-weighted reading), the RMS level never exceeded 7V, meaning that only transient waveform peaks were activating the voltage-rail lifters. The P49 behaved like a high-performance 50W/17dBW amp with 6dBW of dynamic headroom.”

Vision Ears VE5 CIEM Earphones Review

November 21, 2015 Comments Off on Vision Ears VE5 CIEM Earphones Review

” First off, it must be mentioned that the VE5 is a special breed with an unusual signature that Vision Ears have purposefully created to fill in the gap between their model U/V-shaped models such as the VE2/VE4/VE6x1 and the more balanced models such as the VE3/VE6x2. The tonality of the VE5, therefore, is very intriguing and can be more associated to have an n-shaped frequency response where mids are central to the mix. While some people claim that this model is bright owing to its “crystal-clear” mids and treble, I have found that this model leans more towards a neutral tone despite the rather mid-centric approach.”

KHARMA ELEGANCE DB11-S LOUDSPEAKER $54,000 REVIEW

“The attention to small details in the dB11-S is phenomenal. For example, the floor disks into which the SDSS spikes fit have optional inserts made of diamonds. The speaker cable clamping system is also highly effective and easy to use—and it provides a very secure connection for spade lugs in either single or bi-wired configurations.

” The most difficult thing, I suppose, is to find a common element in all the listening sessions that can define the overall qualities of the DAC. Firstly, there is the huge choice of the formats: PCM from 44.1 to 192 kHz and DSD 64-128. I am sure that the common opinion says that the quality of the take is not determined by the bit rate. If you start from a poor base, this will remain the same also at 24/192 or at DSD128. What you can really appreciate in the high-density digital formats is a kind of cultural baggage made by time and listening experiences”

“Dynamically, they’re limited. Instruments and voices are pushed to the front, but that upfront, immediate character makes them a straightforward listen.”
