” I also find it completely ridiculous that I persist in being my own worst enemy in regard to imaging. I can be sitting the sweet spot listening in total harmony to music without a care in the word. Then suddenly, I begin to question things, asking myself in some inquisitive fashion, does this sound right? Ceding to common sense brings me back around but the nagging question lingers. That indecision whether a slight move here or there will improve the imaging and hence my musical enjoyment – and wrestling with the temptation to move the speakers and see if an improvement may, or may not be the result. And of course leaving well enough alone because deep down, I just know for sure it’s right”

” Where vinyl really starts to show off, however, is when you climb a few rungs up the ladder. Boutique branded turntables, bespoke tone-arm and phono cartridge choices, along with dedicated pre-amps, really do offer significant sonic benefits. You could expect to pay anywhere from $2500 to $20,000, with the benefit of being able to upgrade individual components as you go.”

” hese portable players are best thought of as iPods on steroids. With their finely-brushed black aluminum cases and intuitive controls, they give up nothing to Apple in industrial engineering. But iPods max out at a tepid 48/16 resolution, whereas the AKs go to 192/24. ”

BURMESTER MC151 MUSIC CENTER $25,000 Review

“These differences in sound quality are very limited, however, when compared across a very wide range of recordings, and you would probably prefer the Burmester if you like nearfield listening or enjoy sitting in the front of the concert hall—to be as close to the performance as possible.

There also are important trade-offs in features that you need to carefully consider. The EMM Labs XDS1 sells for $25,000. It is only a DAC and SACD/CD player, and does not store music, allow downloading, or have any network features.”

Mark Levinson No.585 integrated amplifier Review $12,000

” Immediately drawn into and involved in the music, I soon realized that I’d inadvertently increased the volume until the No.585’s display read 62dB. Mick Fleetwood’s drums were rendered with enough power and solidity that the Quads began to cut out on peaks. Soon, the No.585 went silent, and its display announced that it had an overheat fault condition. Sure enough, the areas of the top plate nearest the internal heatsinks were almost too hot to touch. I switched the amp into standby, but it continued to display the fault message. I reached around to the back and flipped the main power switch, waited one minute, then flipped it back on. The No.585 began its normal turn-on sequence: I hadn’t broken it. Whew!”

BURMESTER BA31 FLOORSTANDING LOUDSPEAKER REVIEW

” I like to think of the Burmester BA31 as a Plantagenet king – simultaneously courteous and cultured, and capable of unleashing great power when it’s called for. These are speakers that can play softly in the background, yet let slip the musical dogs of war when needed. And it can be slotted into some difficult rooms with ease thanks to the Ambience system. If this is a part of Dieter’s legacy, it’s something to be proud of, and comes strongly recommended.”
