” he Sony NW-ZX2, which received rave reviews and feedback from the consumers when it was first launched, had brought great success to Sony’s inception to this market. Personally, I find it weighs a tad too heavy and size is not favorable to squeeze it in the front pocket of my jeans together with some other stuff. This Sony NW-ZX100 suits and scored perfectly on this aspect. Other than the size and weigh comparison, the NW-ZX100 has a longer battery life span as well, the ZX2 probably takes up more power due to its unique clock that ZX100 doesn’t have. Apart from better parts, dedicated clocks and bigger screen, which enable viewing of videos (seriously who view video on such minute screen nowadays), the ZX100 didn’t wane too much in specifications.”

“Sonically, the same care factored. My choice of electronics mixed a bit of weightiness (Pass) and textural softness (Nagra) with timing acuity from a non-filtering 24/192 R2R converter. All-silver cabling throughout maintained speed and articulation yet nothing got bleached or bright. The G1003MG were not only admirably linear in response but very low in reminders of artifice. By that I mean a sense of cones and domes labouring hard in a stuffy box and struggling with/against a room. Overly ambitious port tunings usually make themselves heard not in a good way. Here that didn’t figure. Bass weight was surprisingly mature, extension lacked the full first octave. Because I had it, I eventually snuck in our Zu Submission sub below 40Hz for some infra-bass assist. For the vast majority of music it wasn’t required at all. For certain ambient fare, it made a nice difference on synths and related ambiance.”

” Now that we know the Kronos/ZYX combo is super silent and highly transparent, we can touch on tonal quality. Tonal response is dead neutral, which I believe is contributed by the cartridge. There’s not a hint of warmth, felt during play back. Having said that, the sound never, never seemed cold either. Highs are succinctly refined with a laid-back air of exquisiteness thrown in for good measure. The highs are always given the right degree prominence, just slightly behind in the sound stage, but yet with every attack and decay intact, before the next note rises. ”
