Rockport Technologies Cygnus Loudspeakers $62,500 pairReview

” s. If someone said that the Rockports of old — say, the Antares through the first-generation Altair — couldn’t give the listener every last drop of detail encoded on hi-rez recordings, particularly in the highs, I wouldn’t argue. In fact, after listening to the Cygnus, I can confidently say that it was altogether more revealing in the highs than any other Rockport speaker I’ve heard. I’ve always described the Rockport house sound as having a tonal balance that slanted down from left to right, as shown on a frequency-response graph: i.e., the bass is a couple dB higher in level than the highs. The Cygnus sounded more neutral. That line, if still not perfectly level across the audioband, would still be closer to flat. The bass is still quite strong, but now it’s more closely matched by the highs. The Cygnus will reveal everything on your best recordings — likely more than you’ve heard with the speakers you’re listening to now, whatever they are”

Oracle Delphi Mk.VI Second Generation turntable
February 10, 2016 Comments Off on Oracle Delphi Mk.VI Second Generation turntable
” At the risk of jumping the gun on my listening comments, I’ll describe here the effectiveness of Oracle’s adjustable suspension-damping scheme. As Jacques Riendeau came to the end of his ministrations, he said he wanted to begin by listening to the Delphi without its suspension damping, and asked for a decent-quality recording of simple music: no audiophile spectaculars (not that I keep such things on hand). I selected “New Chance Blues” and “Green Light on the Southern,” from Norman Blake and Tony Rice’s Blake & Rice (LP, Rounder 0233); the former is a duet for mandolin and guitar, while the latter is a solo vocal by Blake, accompanied by two guitars; I believe M. Riendeau enjoyed both selections.”

PSB SPEAKERS M4U 4 Review
February 10, 2016 Comments Off on PSB SPEAKERS M4U 4 Review
” The build quality to me has been a little underwhelming from such an established brand. I am seeing products come from companies that have just had their products funded by Kickstarter 10x more polished than this and at cheaper price points. I mean the filter in the sound bore on one of my channels was on it side blocking it, I had to get tweezers and go all DIY on it before I even listened. Now while PSB do boast these being lightweight, which is indeed the case due to them being made of plastic, the finish is actually good. What is not is the way the seam is so visible with a gap all the way down the housing and a faceplate that looks so easy to pry off.”

” There is a hint of thickness to the bass when the volume is pushed, but it’s far from a dealbreaker. Most usage won’t require anything like the volume levels you have to reach before it really becomes noticeable… because this can go loud. Really loud.”

” When we tested the N90Q back in the January issue we were impressed by its tremendous ability to balance high-quality sound with effective noise-cancelling technology and its five-star rating for sound quality is no exaggeration.”

Rega RP8 Turntable Review
February 9, 2016 Comments Off on Rega RP8 Turntable Review
“The RP8 has an impressive looking ‘skeletal’ plinth design and uses an updated version of the Planar 9’s engineered hub bearing assembly (more of the trickle down). The outer shell that turns the turntable from skeleton to full body does not touch the curves of the main plinth and is primarily a platform for the dustcover. Rega uses a 24v low voltage motor that is controlled by an outboard, customized power supply. The glass platter is a triple layer design and the sub platter is made of aluminum. ”
