Whammerdyne Amplifier Review

” While Whammerdyne will probably never become the next McIntosh or Conrad Johnson, Hickman’s commitment to his product and customers is as strong as that of anyone in the business, and I am confident that this product will have the necessary support going forward to be valid. The way this amplifier is so over-designed and overbuilt, I can’t imagine it failing in this lifetime, or even the next. The $25k price tag is indeed high, but considering the amount of R&D, combined with the labor involved and nothing but the best parts under the hood, it is worth the price asked. And in the light of some SET’s fetching 2–10 times more, it represents high value as well.”

KEF M400 Headphone Review

“All in all, the M400 sounds refined and clear, with bass that is definitely goosed up just a tad. I’m not normally a fan of overemphasized bass, but it’s done tastefully here on the M400, and I rather enjoyed it. And that pretty much sums up my feelings about this headphone: The M400 strikes a perfect balance of comfort, value, sound quality, portability, and style.”

PARADIGM PRESTIGE 2000SW SUBWOOFER REVIEW

May 15, 2016 Comments Off on PARADIGM PRESTIGE 2000SW SUBWOOFER REVIEW

When listening to music, the 2000SW had a knack for sounding utterly natural and seemed to integrate seamlessly with my Salk Songtowers at an 80Hz crossover. All the things I look for when listening to a subwoofer with music seemed to be handled deftly by the Paradigm 2000SW. Lower register piano keys were authoritative and weighty, kick drums hit solidly and were suitably felt at volume, and stand-up bass lines were thick and deep sounding without losing any of the micro details in the string sounds. Overall pitch definition was excellent as well. This subwoofer definitely relayed all the subtle nuances in different bass instruments where lesser designs can sound monotonous and one-note-ish.”

Goldmund Telos 360 Universal Mono Amplifier review

“This was very interesting experience and a journey towards the understanding and experiencing the Goldmund sound potency and audio impact. There are many high-end and ultra high-end companies joining the “dandy” club and they’re pushing hard the industry norms with the unique, potent and musically empowered amplifiers. What some of them do not have is heritage and brand recognition, but the path leading up to the top seems to be much more shorther then in the past.”

UNIQUE MELODY MIRACLE V2 REVIEW

May 14, 2016 Comments Off on UNIQUE MELODY MIRACLE V2 REVIEW

“Those listening to UM CIEMs for a while will not be surprised that the Miracle has a bit of a peak in the lower treble around 5-7k. It is indeed slight forward and attention grabbing. On the flip side decay is a little short so sibilance is reasonably well controlled but it can get a tiny bit hot on heavy percussion work if the original recordings are bright to begin with. It is a fine line between ensuring the upper mid-range and lower treble having energy and sounding peaky but I think UM just about got it under control. Treble articulation is excellent though with a nice clean response and plenty of detail.”

JL Audio Dominion d108 Subwoofer Review

There are several ways to set up subwoofers. One is with outboard calibration gear, which includes microphones, software, and DSP. And another way is by ear. It can get as complicated as you like it. I chose the “by ear” method. Also, with most subs, you have a choice of either using speaker level input, or line level input. Speaker level input means you run your speaker cables directly into your subwoofer, then an additional run of speaker cable to your main speakers. Line Level input means the sub receives the line output from your preamp or integrated amp, and you will use either your preamp/amp’s onboard bass management, or the controls available on the subwoofer. In either case, your speakers run full range.”
