“Considering the fact this appeal has spread like wildfire, simply buying a record player (used or new) doesn’t offer much in the way of expressing your individuality. But what if you made your own? This is exactly what Instructables user Mikeshorr117 did and the finished product is gorgeous. With a little bit of plywood, a few 9V batteries, and a small set of speakers, this savvy DIYer created a completely original vinyl turntable that not even the trendiest music lover could own.

The smoothness of the entire enclosure is enabled by a subtle feature: the cable strain relief is actually inside the enclosure. The cable emerges from a small grommeted porthole, colored to indicate left and right channels. I haven’t tried intentionally pulling on the cable to test the strength of the configuration, but I’ve felt no looseness in any of my day-to-day use. This configuration also allows the freedom to wear the Finder X1 cable-down or cable-up and over-ear. The cable is made from silver-plated copper and sheathed in a smoky translucent casing that pairs well with the color of the titanium. It’s smooth and pliable with a slight tendency to hold its shape. However, it also seems remarkably resistant to tangling, which is a huge plus for me. The cable can have some slight microphonics at times, but I don’t find it particularly egregious or even intrusive. What little there is can generally be alleviated with a good seal and/or wearing the IEM’s over-ear. The cable is terminated in a straight, gold-plated 1/8” TRS plug. The plug is housed in metal as well, adding to the overall quality of the unit.”

” There’s also a wonderful massed vocal effect on the cut ‘Love put on your faces’ from this Barber album. The choir-like vocals seem to float up and out, with a depth that is almost eerie when you listen closely. I’d largely forgotten this until the Fifty90s delivered this effect, capturing my attention and wrapping me in a sonic space that felt tangible and multilayered. Yes, this recording sounds good on most systems but there’s a distinction between good sounding and attention-grabbing realism that not all speakers can make. That the Fifty90s can puts them in pretty exclusive company.”

“How better to check out a component’s reproduction of the sound of a solo instrument than to play some solo piano music? I switched to Tidal and played Warren Mailley-Smith’s performance of Grieg’s Wedding Day at Troldhaugen, Op.65 No.6, from his album Rhapsody in Blue (16/44.1 FLAC, Sleeveless). The N100H’s ability to reproduce realistic dynamic contrasts made this recording sound better than anything else I’ve heard via Tidal. Splendid.”

Heron 5 Amplifier Review

” A true revelation was the ability to listen to the Rolling Stones on my HD800, any track, off of any of their albums, yes they remained poorly recorded, no “silk purses out of sow’s ears” (I was due a cliché). This is just place where my LCD-3f had always been my first choice, by a wide margin (yes the Audeze bass still makes them the first choice, just less so). The Heron 5 added warmth and bass punch as compared to the Taurus Mk.2 and was huge plus with less than stellar recordings with the HD800 and the Ether C’s that I listened to briefly at the Music City Meet. Several of the Ether C owners reported that the Airist Heron 5, in my setup, was the best that they had heard these headphones sound.

” You’ll notice that each member of the Prestige GR Series is similarly styled. That is, they all look like someone has fallen in love with an Edwardian-era gramophone – you know, when audio players actually looked like something you’d decorate the parlour with – and fashioned a speaker out of it. Or two speakers actually, because they do play in stereo. It’s a specific look that will appeal to those with a particular aesthetic, or perhaps those with a beautiful old villa where these beauties would look right at home. And to be honest, there is something comfortably old-world about the Prestige GR series, and when you’re sitting in a room the look of the loudspeakers staring you in the face does impact on the way you hear the sound.”

Rega Planar 2 Review

” Any hi-fi kit that’s going to get the best of SBTRKT has to be fairly methodical in its handling of flittering tinny beats, slicing percussions and frenetic rhythms, and while the Rega has the necessary precision and rhythmic know-how to coordinate them accurately in the soundstage, its delivery isn’t without enthusiasm.”

” The big news here though is the V6’s ability to decode MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) files, a Meridian-developed compression format that aims to deliver accurate sound while packaging hi-res music into about the same amount of space as conventional CD-spec (16-bit/44.1kHz) files.”
