” Delving deeper, I never would have described my reference amp as sounding anything other than quiet and unobtrusive. Once again, though, the T+A honed the margins with greater acuity. Mark Knopfler’s muttered opening lines in “Brothers in Arms” weren’t spotlit against quite as “black” a background with the Hegel in play. In fact, I could hear white noise from the tweeter of one of my Monitor Audio Silver 10s from a couple inches away — something I could never do with the T+A. Is that white noise still audible from 8’ or 10’ away? Hard to say. The Hegel is a top-flight integrated, due in no small part to its highly competent built-in DAC section. The PA 2000 R was, overall, a bit better: just as transparent but offering greater dynamic contrast, a voicing more true to the source, and an overall build quality that puts to shame the folded-aluminum case of my H360. You get what you pay for — and as the PA 2000 R could push an insensitive loudspeaker like the two-way Magico S1 Mk.II to its breaking point, it’s something of a brute, too.”

The DAC-10H does have greater flexibility than the IHA-1 with more inputs (including analog line-level) and outputs as well as a very good DAC capable of 384/32 PCM and DSD128. The DAC-10H can also handle a wider range of headphones successfully. Sonically, the DAC-10H offers a clean, clear, more matter-of-fact solid-state view of the musical event as compared to the IHA-1’s tube-centric three-dimensional panorama.”

“I finally want to then show the measurements I took of Josh’s unit before it was made into mine on middle bass settings and as you can see it is pretty consistent with my pair with just a bit more of a dip between 200Hz and 1kHz (probably down too bass dial position being slightly higher since more mid bass). The only major difference is better channel matching!”

” I recently purchased the hi-rez digital transfers of Keith Jarrett’s The Kîln Concert (24/96 ALAC files, ECM/HDtracks), so that I could compare them with the MQA versions in a future review. Well-recorded solo piano is always difficult for speakers to reproduce correctly, because piano notes have high levels of energy in the region where speakers have resonances of various kinds, and because the nature of the music often doesn’t mask those resonances once they have been excited. This essential Keith Jarrett album does have a rather close balance, but it sounded superb through the PSBs. I couldn’t hear anything untoward in the midrange, other than a faint whistle when I put my ear close to the uppermost ports on the enclosure’s rear. I returned to this album after taking the T3’s measurements, and found a high-Q resonance in the top and middle port outputs that must be associated with what I heard. However, back at the listening position, even after I knew the resonance was present, I still couldn’t hear that it had any noticeable effect on the sound of Jarrett’s piano.”
