“THe M5 outperforms the M3’s treble presentation in so many ways. Whilst not being the last word in natural decay, the M5 lower treble is far less sibilant and peaky with a much smoother and less uneven treble presentation. I always though the M3 could get a touch too peaky, but the M5 seems to have a more refined approach with excellent detail and articulation. It is not as smooth sounding or warm as the Alien, it does have a sharper edge to its attack but it easily outperforms the even sharper sounding Cayin N5 and the flatter sounding Opus#1 and definitely more spacious sounding than the old M3.”

“The limiting factor to the ACE is fairly obvious. Strip away all the features and it’s a 50W amplifier. It’s a really good 50W amplifier, capable of punching above its weight, and hangs on to its sonic character for a lot longer than most 50W integrated amplifiers, but that still imposes certain limits on what speakers you can use with the ACE. I don’t suppose anyone in their right mind would use the ACE with a punishing £100,000 behemoth loudspeaker with the impedance load of a small asteroid, but this highlights the ACE’s performance in positive terms. You wouldn’t partner these two because of the price differential, but in performance terms, the ACE is a more tempting proposition, thanks to its outstanding sound quality. If you are going for some really high-grade loudspeakers, it might be best looking at a separates approach – very possibly from the same brand.”

” If the DPA-1M could be said to have a character, it was in the direction of being lively—a bit forward rather than laid-back or subdued. For those familiar with digital cameras, the character of the DPA-1M was like a camera’s Vivid setting, which maximizes color saturation and contrast. Of course, a system’s sonic character is a function of all of the components in that system, especially the speakers, and one of the strengths of the Wilson Sabrinas is their ability to produce a dramatic, big-speaker sound that is out of proportion to their size. In this, the Sabrinas and the DPA-1Ms worked synergistically—which may be why Wilson so often uses these amps to demo the Sabrinas.”
