PSB SubSeries 450 Subwoofer $1499 – Review

“Summarizing the SubSeries 450’s sound, Kevin proclaimed: “Its ability to deliver dead-flat LF response down to 20Hz is equaled and, perhaps or perhaps not, surpassed by monster models costing twice as much.” That indicates high value indeed from a $1500 subwoofer — the sort of high value that has been an earmark of Paul Barton designs from PSB’s beginnings. However, for those for whom a smaller, lighter subwoofer makes more practical sense than a big, heavy one, even when price is not a concern, Kevin had this reassurance: ”

ROSSO FIORENTINO CERTALDO FLOORSTANDING LOUDSPEAKER REVIEW
October 11, 2016 Comments Off on ROSSO FIORENTINO CERTALDO FLOORSTANDING LOUDSPEAKER REVIEW
” The Certaldo is a slimline two-and-a-half-way design, with a 25mm silk dome tweeter accompanying a single 130mm composite fibreglass cone midrange and two of the same working as woofers. The internal wiring is all from van den Hul, while the silver-and-gold-over-copper terminals are Rosso Fiorentino’s own. Certaldo is the top end of the company’s third-in-line Prestige Series; more domestically-friendly, less demanding, and less expensive than the brand’s Flagship or Reference lines, but more uncompromising in design and execution than the Rosso Fiorentino Classic Series. Certaldo stands about a metre high on its plinth, which allows for the down-firing port (it is also rear-vented). This all makes for a loudspeaker that returns a claimed sensitivity of 87dB, and a nominal impedance of eight ohms with a five ohm minimum impedance. In other words, possibly very slightly below average sensitivity, but nothing too difficult for any decent amplifier to drive.”

INEAR’S PROPHILE-8

“The impressions above are all based on both switches turned off. Switching on either will not change much, so please do not expect a 4in1 earphone design (neutral, bassy, bright, balanced). You can add a little oomph to the bass (+3dB to be exact), but it is not the same effect as adding a subwoofer. It is nicely added across the low frequencies and it should compensate lack of bass on some recordings. On well-mastered albums I found the bass boost to add too much thickness, though not reaching bass-heavy amount. I thought the default tuning is just right”

Questyle CMA 600i Review
October 10, 2016 Comments Off on Questyle CMA 600i Review
” Stacked into the Questyle product line, it is easy to see the direction that Bruce and the team are aiming for with the 600i. The sound is very well rounded, as is the bountiful number of connections the sturdy, yet space-sensitive chassis holds. It aims to please, and its tight and dynamic recreation of music should supply any full-sized headphone with exactly what it needs to get the job done right. The timbre and tone feel very balanced, as does its frequency response”

Mytek Brooklyn DAC $1,995 – Review
October 10, 2016 Comments Off on Mytek Brooklyn DAC $1,995 – Review
” The Brooklyn DAC drove the AudioQuest NightHawks to lovely levels of musicality. This combo actually worked really, really well as it imparted a full, rich, and musically sound sound. Of course which headphones will respond equally well, or better, or worse, is up to you and your cans. That being said, I see no technical reason for unhappiness.”

AURALiC ARIES MINI and Lightning DS Review
October 9, 2016 Comments Off on AURALiC ARIES MINI and Lightning DS Review
Switching to Keb Mo’s self titled album, it’s a bit easier to hear where the MINI is far better than other systems of similar ilk and where it doesn’t match up to its more advanced brethren, the original ARIES and ARIES LE. Compared to the Sonos Connect the MINI sounds like a breath of fresh air, with real body to the music and a naturalness that makes the Connect just sound skewed. Moving from the 16/44.1 version of this album to the DSD version brings a different sound altogether, that can’t be compared apples to apples with other devices because they don’t support DSD. Nonetheless, the MINI is a best in class component”
