“The MartinLogan Expression is able to generate high sound levels compared to other electrostatic speakers as the stators are closer to the charged Mylar like material than other brands of electrostatic speakers. The panels were also designed to have twice the radiating area of a traditional electrostatic panel of the same size. From my experience, very loud sound levels were obtained with 6 to 60 watts as measured by my amps wattmeter. The Expression is rated at 91 dB sensitivity and a nominal impedance of 4 ohms. However at 20,000 Hz the impedance drops to .5 ohms. Thus, the speakers may not sound crisp with some tube amplifiers in the higher frequencies”

“Another notable characteristic of the PB16-Ultra driver is the use of an underhung voice coil, although this is not quite as radical since it was also used in the PB13-Ultra. A voice coil being underhung means the height of the coil winding is not larger than the magnetic gap that the coil travels in (a more thorough explanation can be found in this article). The advantage of this approach in the PB16-Ultra is an underhung coil can grant more linear excursion, and this seems to be the case with SVS’s claimed linear excursion of 82 mm peak-to-peak, giving it a tremendous 41 mm of xmax, which is the largest xmax I have ever heard of for a commercial subwoofer using a cone of 18” or less.”

“In reality, the build is probably not to dissimilar to most products of this style design. By that I mean an acrylic custom styled universal. However, there is just something about the powdered matte finish of this that makes it feel more premium and durable. Maybe it is, maybe it just gives that impression but regardless I wouldn’t want to drop these from any real height to any hard surface. Just in case you know, these are expensive little gems! I also like the additional touch of the engraved model and serial number, I love little touches like that!”
