Focus Audio Liszt Concerto Mono Integrated Amplifiers $25,000 Review

” In Concerto No.2, I could clearly hear the trumpet dancing with the harpsichord, despite the latter being way down in the mix. As it hung in space, each instrument had a world-class three-dimensionality that I laid at the feet of the inner light portrayed by the Liszt Concertos. As with the Liszt Sonata, I think this was a very slight added richness, but it served — served, I say — the cause of musical realism, helping instruments pop from the fabric of the recording. I strongly feel that this helped to reproduce much of the human magic that’s lost when live music is compressed through the tiny point in space that is a microphone.”

KEF Reference 1 – $8,000 REVIEW
February 19, 2017 Comments Off on KEF Reference 1 – $8,000 REVIEW
“I spent some quality time comparing the Reference 1 with Bower & Wilkins’ flagship monitor, the 805 D3. The Reference 1 is a three-way speaker, the 805 D3 is a two-way, so it didn’t reach as deep into the bass on my Lee “Scratch” Perry dub reggae CDs. The Reference 1’s low end outpaces the 805 D3’s, but the 805 D3 is a higher-resolution, more transparent design, so I could more clearly pick out individual voices in choral recordings. The Reference 1s projected a bigger, yet precisely focused stereo soundstage. As I continued to listen, I came to feel both speakers were highly accomplished performers with all music genres.”

BEL CANTO REF600M POWER AMPLIFIER $5,000 REVIEW
February 19, 2017 Comments Off on BEL CANTO REF600M POWER AMPLIFIER $5,000 REVIEW
“In the past I’ve reviewed lots of power amplifiers. Once I even had a dream that I was twenty feet tall with a Krell 160 monoblock under each arm striding across the urban landscape yelling, “I am Amp Man!” (imagine Godzilla, only prettier). Luckily I had that dream only once. But with the advent of compact and lightweight switching amplifiers such as the REF600M no audiophile need experience the “pleasures” of lugging around a 60-plus-pound amplifier because it was the only device that could deliver the power and finesse needed to drive a top-echelon system.”

Sound Galleries SGM 2015 Music Server Review
February 19, 2017 Comments Off on Sound Galleries SGM 2015 Music Server Review
“I listened to my system with the Sound Galleries SGM server for months, which adds up to hundreds of hours of listening time and lots and lots of music. Switching back to my sT/mR combo, which took all of a minute or so, was not a huge letdown. Changes included flabbier bass, less tonal variation, less precise sound location, less precise sound image, less depth, less height, less width, and generally music sounds a bit homogenized from track to track. There was sameness to the sound of music and things were a bit wilder and a bit woollier, which reduced the heights of emotional connection, and the sheer joy, of listening to lots and lots of music.

MartinLogan Expression ESL 13A Floorstanding Speaker Reviewed
February 18, 2017 Comments Off on MartinLogan Expression ESL 13A Floorstanding Speaker Reviewed
”
Having listened to several generations of ESL speakers over the past 15 to 20 years, I found the new Expression ESL 13A speakers to be a significant step forward. The greatly improved bass technology makes positioning the speakers without sacrificing bass performance much easier to do, and the improved panels somehow manage to squeeze out even more details from the music than prior iterations–the combination of which is a detailed and transparent speaker that gets out of the way of your music.”
