” Musically the Sonica does not disappoint, although it required a few days of break-in to sound its best–especially in musical highs, where it initially sounded harsh. I listened to DSD, 24/96, and 24/192 sources, as well as Red Book titles in 16/44.1 via Tidal Hi-Fi. As I refer to my listening notes to describe the Sonica’s signature characteristics, I repeatedly wrote that it possesses a sweetness in the midrange and midbass, and it presents a more accurate soundstage than many other DACs I can think of”

COS ENGINEERING H1 HEADPHONE AMP REVIEW

” Not that you should think of the H1 as a metric superstar. It isn’t as crazily detailed as Vivace. It is warmer and more detailed up top, and presents far more spatial detail between frequencies. On balance, the H1 sits between the crazy numbers-game performance of Vivace and the warmer, NOS-sounding HILO. Of course, it hasn’t Vivace’s mild low-pass filter. Its highs therefore are clearer, and more extended.”

“I indulged in some hi-res files of Led Zeppelin II while comparing the AF1120 with another six-balanced-armature in-ear, a 64 Audio V6, and the two headphones were pretty far apart. The AF1120’s muscular sound added more juice to Zep- pelin’s power delivery, so John Paul Jones’ bass was gutsier. John Bonham’s drums rocked harder, and dynamics sounded more alive. The AF1120 also showered love on Jimmy Page’s guitar and Robert Plant’s vocals.”

KEF R500 Floorstanding Speaker Review

“Here, the news is also very good. KEF’s considerable experience with metal drivers shows here and the R500 manages to be tonally accurate and almost liquid smooth across the mid and upper registers. Listening to the 24/96 download of the Neil Cowley Trio’s Touch and Flee sees the KEF in its element. The piano is weighty and rich and, aided by the KEF’s effortless sense of three dimensionality, it becomes a believable instrument. The supporting double bass, tucked off to one side has weight and texture that allows it to sound consistently real. Switching over to vinyl and playing the same album again is arguably even better as it seems to let the KEFs flow in a way that is enormously enjoyable”

Mundorf MA30 Custom Made Speaker Kit SilverGold Series Review – World’s First!

” The MA30 SG speaker pairs Mundorf’s pneumatic Air Motion Tweeter (AMT) – the AMT19CM1.1 with Accuton’s ceramic mid-woofer, the 6.25” C158-8-085, outfitted with a titanium voicecoil former. These drivers were chosen to maximize performance value, without musical compromise. The Mundorf crossover is massive, making up a good chunk of the total weight of the speaker and is definitely a highlight of this speaker. The layout avoids any parallel components and allows for bi-wiring / bi-amping hookups. It crosses at 3450Hz, with 1st order hi-pass/low-pass 6dB notch filters that ensure a linear response. Mundorf has incorporated their all-time best MCap capacitor – the MCap Supreme EVO SilverGold Oil in the MA30 SG Series, which the company holds to deliver the highest music performance, detailed staging, color and texture ever delivered. ”

TAD ME-1 speakers $12,495 Review

“A lot of what distinguishes high-end speakers from merely excellent, more moderately priced speakers is the way they “separate” each instrument and vocal in recordings — creating a sound closer to the way you would hear them if you were in the studio with the artists. That was true with my “Percussion Music” CD with classical composers Edgar Varese, Henry Cowell and Charles Wuorinen’s works. The CD amply displayed the ME-1’s dynamic range stamina with the album’s all-percussion symphonies. When I (briefly) played the music loud enough to annoy my neighbors, these small speakers handled power with ease.”

McIntosh MP100 Phono Stage And Hi-Res Audio DAC $2000 – Review

“McIntosh Laboratory had a good idea in combining an RIAA phono stage with a 24-bit PCM digital audio converter (ADC), as it makes a relative breeze of transcribing beloved records to a more convenient format. It also presents an opportunity to make informed decisions about the components and calibration of a turntable – I found myself making recordings of different decks to compare their sound signature easily, as well as comparing pressings and small geometry changes, for example.”
