I found that on ‘If I Could Eat Your Words’, the ETHER C offered a slightly but noticeably higher degree of resolution on upper midrange and treble transient and textural details, leading to a more tightly focused sound overall (although I found this performance gap could be narrowed by fitting the ÆON with high performance after-market signal cables such as Kimber’s Axios headphone cables). On the same track, the ETHER Flow offered more solidly grounded mid-bass, which was noticeable on Arnopol’s acoustic bass lines, and it also offered slightly richer and more vivid tonal colours, plus somewhat more resolution and three-dimensionality from top to bottom. Even so, I think most listeners would consider the performance gaps between the ÆON and the ETHER C or ETHER Flow to be fairly narrow ones, meaning that the ÆON offers impressive value for money, to say the least.”

“Honestly, I don’t buy into the DAP side of a sound of things. What do I mean? Well at a certain point these high-end audiophile focussed players sound very much alike. They are all variations of excellent and used purely as a sole source (ie without my Chord Mojo etc). The AK70 competes with pretty much anything out there in the top end with variations coming here and there. I could happily have this or the Opus#1, the Fiio X5 Gen III or a host of the other Astell & Kern audio players. ”

In it, Rebecca Pidgeon’s voice sounded less mechanical and more human, and the instruments had more inner detail and nuance. The PS Audio DirectStream just sounded more enjoyably realistic than the Mytek Brooklyn — as it darned well should, for three times the price.”

“The Kii Audio Three is an outstanding loudspeaker. However, it took a bit of getting used to—in addition to visual bias, under all but the most ideal situations each of us is adapted to the effect of his or her room on the sound. While I was struck by the transparency of the Kii Threes’ soundstaging and transparency, freed as they are from most acoustical influences, the result was somewhat surreal. I found myself groping for explanations that apply more to conventional speakers: What happened to the warmth? Isn’t it a bit bright? Is there a midrange suckout? Are the rear-mounted drivers spraying sound out the back to be washed back at me from the front wall?”
