Their exceptional dynamic competence had also been clearly apparent when listening to them drive the ground-breaking YG Acoustics Sonja XVs last fall. The speed and resolution they exhibited when recreating leading transients on percussion (and strings, piano, and horns) were revelatory, and their ability to deliver physical punch, producing chest-crushing impact from drum whacks or bass string snaps, was exhilarating.”

“Due to the strong bass and elevated upper mids, the lower midrange is a little lacking. The Sphear S is missing that fullness and warmth you get from the midrange, which gives the overall sound a brighter sheen. This is most obvious in the vocal presentation, where the vocals are very clear, but are missing the weight that a stronger response in the lower mids can give you. Now, don’t get me wrong, I really like how the Sphear S does voices, but, it isn’t a romantic choice. It can also be quite prone to sibilance, so know your sources.”

The neutral, yet excellent, ES80 has quickly become one of my favorite CIEMs, and it’s even pushing the UM Maestro V1 from the list.”

The distortion caused by sound waves propagating out of the horn can cause coloration. This tends to show up in vocals. This is not the case with the Trio Horns. Whether it was Imogen Heap, Peter Gabriel, K.D. Lang, Don Henley or Bjork, each retained their distinctive timber and intonation. With each listen, I gained more understanding of how these great artists used their voices to enhance the emotion of every song.”

“Lest expectations begin spinning out of control, the T1 doesn’t quite hit the bullseye in every sonic criterion. It misses some of the textural, tonal, and dynamic linearity of an expensive studio monitor. Transparency is very good but as the music descends into the upper- and midbass there are hints of dynamic reticence and traces of cabinet noise that cause decays and reverberant information to be slightly reduced.”
