“These floorstanders dig surprisingly deep in the bass for their size. They stay punchy and tuneful, even at higher levels, and deliver the music’s complex rhythms with swagger to spare. As with most high-end speakers, the sheer clarity and lack of distortion on offer may appear to reduce the grittiness of the music played, but listen carefully and you’ll find the feel and energy of the track remains very much intact.”

“I also took a look at the crossover parts that I’d used with the AMT’s, and quickly came to the realization that I already had a pair of highly regarded caps on hand of the correct configuration. I went back to the HHH site and read through the information again; the guy there basically loved the Audyn caps, and felt they were highly musical and an outstanding value for such little money. Another realization hit me: I’ve got these really decent caps on hand, they’re the correct value, and they’ve been burning in for literally thousands of hours over the last few years. If they made a difference, I’d probably hear it right away. I went straight to the workbench and grabbed all the tools necessary to make the cap swap.”

ORIOLUS B300S REVIEW

“For a portable tube amp, the B300s has some pretty good numbers for its amplification stage. One of my own perceived weaknesses of the Sony digital amplifiers is the lack of power compared to the analog amp stages from the likes of iBasso. For example, the Sony 1Z is only capable of 250mW + 205mW into a 16Ω load on its balanced output with a much lower 60mW + 60mW single-ended.. The Zx300 has slightly less at 50mW + 50MW into 16Ω unbalanced and 200mW + 200mW into the same load.”

Studio Electric M4 stand mount loudspeakers $2400 Review
November 17, 2018 Comments Off on Studio Electric M4 stand mount loudspeakers $2400 Review
“Both the Studio Electric M4 and I got a workout, the speakers from the system, and me from moving them around and setting them up in each room. Speaker placement is and should always be a concern. I have yet to find that magical speaker that is comfortable just about anywhere in a room, and before any of you get any ideas, these speakers while musical are not that magical. I was able to get enjoyable non-fatiguing sound in each room, and in keeping with the designer’s suggestion they were placed on 28” stands, one inch taller than recommended, and placed them about 24” from the rear walls in the smaller rooms and a good 36” from the rear wall in the primary room. In all instances, following basic geometric ratios with respect to listening position and distance, I had a really fun week.

MONOPRICE MONOLITH LIQUID PLATINUM HEADPHONE AMPLIFIER – REVIEW

“Dr. Cavalli has also included a protection circuit on the Platinum just to help ensure against damage. I accidentally triggered it a couple of times trying to plug in headphones with the volume up and bassy music playing. Oops. Triggering the protection circuit will cause the light on the front to turn red and music will stop playing for about 30 seconds while the amp takes a little siesta. While I wouldn’t go so far as to say, “It’s built like a tank”, it is a solid feeling component and nothing was loose, wonky or made me feel like it was destined to break. The Monolith Liquid Platinum has a good spread of features that make it useful in a lot of situations. But enough of all this build quality stuff! Let’s move on to the fun part… the sound.”

November 16, 2018 Comments Off on Chord Electronics launch ULTIMA flagship amplifier and preamplifier
“The ULTIMA mono amplifier unit has an incredible 64 proprietary MOSFET power devices that demand the most advanced and refined drive circuitry, suitably devoid of sound-degrading components. The drive circuitry features an ultra-low-distortion, high-voltage amplifier operating at very high speed: 300 volts per microsecond technologies with advanced feed-forward and feedback compensation techniques. It also benefits from Chord Electronics’ TO3-style dual die lateral matched MOSFETs, which are continuously monitored with output stage error-correction circuitry and feature fully balanced input circuitry with DC-tracking servos and full temperature compensation.
ULTIMA is incredibly powerful and offers 780 watts into 8 ohms, 1,400 watts into 4 ohms and 2,500 watts into 2 ohms. ULTIMA’s peak output current exceeds 500 amps, an extremely high current differentiated by the speed at which the dynamic peaks can be delivered, bringing astonishing dynamics, fidelity and unrivalled musicality. ULTIMA is truly an unprecedented amplifier design with exceptional performance and is one of the most advanced hi-fi amplifiers in the world.
