Designed as a “complete wireless sound system,” the Dynaudio Focus 10 active monitors are the most musically satisfying one-stop playback solution I’ve had the pleasure of hanging with. Thanks to their wireless options, built-in upsampling DAC, multiple streaming options, DSP, and optional Dirac room correction (which I didn’t try), all you need supply is a Wi-Fi signal, a streaming subscription, a smartphone or tablet for control, and a little time to fine-tune everything. If you already have Roon, you’re ready to go; you can even skip Roon and stick with Tidal Connect. The Focus 10s are easy to set up and optimize, and they deliver all they promise.

If you want to rock out, or if your room is less than intimate in size, the more expensive Focus 30 and Focus 50 models will likely prove more satisfying. But within its limitations of image size and bass quantity, the Focus 10 is one of the most musically satisfying active loudspeakers I’ve had the pleasure to audition. Highly recommended

Record Doctor VI $299 Review

February 28, 2023 Comments Off on Record Doctor VI $299 Review

Absolutely! We cleaned a number of records. Some that were used purchases. Some that were previously cleaned quite some time back, and a new one. We braved it and played portions of tracks on each record briefly before and after to confirm what we heard. The Record Doctor VI cleaned the used records to quite a good degree. We were surprised. The previously cleaned records and the new one we felt got cleaned up a bit in spots we thought were already cleaned. With the exception of the spinning motor on my Clearaudio Smart Matrix this unit came pretty darn close to my reference in its performance. I will be honest, when I first took it out of the box, I thought due to the fact that you had to manually hand wind this unit it wouldn’t perform as good as my reference. I was wrong. Need a very good record cleaner but don’t want to spend a lot of money. This is it.

VAC Statement 452iQ Musicbloc Power Amplifier $75,000 each REVIEW

February 27, 2023 Comments Off on VAC Statement 452iQ Musicbloc Power Amplifier $75,000 each REVIEW

Occasionally, before putting something on that I knew to be a little thin and edgy, I’d mentally ask the 452iQs to be a pal and help a brother out. Nah, that’s not their thing. Yes, they have a wonderful sense of flow.  Yes, they reveal complex harmonic and dynamic textures in a recording without adding any noticeable additional texture or obvious slowing of the dynamic envelope. No, they will not magically be your bro and smooth over the treble or pump up the bass on an edgy and/or bass light recording.

At this level of the audiophile mountaintop, the gear is supposed to be as unerringly faithful as possible to what’s on a recording. But for me, there is good clean and not so good clean. Marginal clean has something in the sound that is missing or is off in some way that is hard to put your finger on. Everything might sound impressive – but somehow, I’m not drawn to the music. I might be having a fun time in a cerebral way by marveling at all the detail, bass slam, or whatever, but I’m not really listening to the music.

The VAC Statement 452iQ is my idea of a good clean. Surely it has something to do with using vacuum tubes and transformers, but I think it has more to do with what designer Kevin Hayes likes to hear. I think he is like me and certain other audiophiles in the sense that, yes, we want to hear everything, but not at the expense of musical involvement. I found the 452iQ to be everything I want to hear in the way of limitless dynamics, 3-dimensional imaging, and wide frequency bandwidth but beyond all that, these amps are musically involving. These days, I don’t want to be steered into listening to the gear; I want to listen to the music. More than a few times, I felt that I was hearing a familiar favorite recording for the first time. Not as in new little details emerging, but a macro sense of simply hearing it.

Wolf von Langa WVL 12639 SON Loudspeaker System $17,995 Review

Clear plastic encases the WVL AMT tweeter; it stands upright at a slight angle. The tweeter mount sits fully across the top of the main cabinet, held in place with invisible magnets. Thanks to the magnetic hold-down the tweeter enclosure can move back and forth on the cabinet for time alignment and balance between upper and lower frequencies. The tweeter mounts off center allowing you to place it toward the inside or outside of the cabinet—closer to or further from a sidewall—just swap the pair across cabinets to change the orientation for best sound.

WESTONE AUDIO MACH 30 REVIEW

February 26, 2023 Comments Off on WESTONE AUDIO MACH 30 REVIEW

Mach 30’s unique polycarbonate shell boasts superior ergonomics compared to anything on the market. With the Linum BaX cable, it is an extremely lightweight and comfortable set that can be easily used anywhere. It’s unfortunate that it lacks the performance leap we saw in the Mach 70 and Mach 80. Still, keep an eye out for discounts. If you can get it in the $300 range, it is an option to consider.

Audio Note Meishu Tonmeister Phono integrated amplifier $19,300 Review

only talked about vinyl, because I had my best experiences with vinyl. But I also used the Meishu with my HoloAudio May DAC. The combination was rich and fluid and brought me many hours of musical satisfaction and surprise.

In 2011, Art Dudley wrote in his review of the Audio Note Jinro integrated of “an abundance of that often-noted-yet-never-explained ‘SET sound’ that allows solo voices and instruments to stand musically and spatially proud of the rest of the mix.” That, certainly, is part of what I heard with this Meishu amplifier. It framed every recording within its unique space with meatiness and viscosity, drive and dynamics, deep tone and texture.

Words fail to express the satisfaction I derived listening to music through this expensive Audio Note integrated amplifier. I’ve got nothing bad to say about it—except for the air thing, if you care about that. I detected no (other) anomalies, artifacts, sonic peculiarities, or outright shortcomings. The Tonmeister, together with the Audio Note SUT I auditioned it with, took what I hear from my vinyl collection and made it better, portraying each performance as a singular, unique event occurring at a particular time and place, its secrets revealed.

Børresen Acoustics Z1 and 01Review

February 25, 2023 Comments Off on Børresen Acoustics Z1 and 01Review

The Cryo Edition version is similar in construction to the standard version. Only in the Cryo version, all metal parts that can be found in the loudspeaker are cryogenically treated one piece at a time. The parts are cooled down to -196 degrees Celsius and slowly brought back to room temperature. As a result, the internal molecular structure changes, and the stress from the materials disappears. The cryo treatment is done in-house at Børresen Acoustics itself, it is an expensive process but yields a substantial gain in sound quality.

The Silver Supreme Edition is again the same as the Cryo version, however, this version utilizes hand-cast and CNC-machined pure silver induction rings in the drivers. These drastically change the properties of drivers, in a very positive way. The inductance is about 12 times lower than that of conventional drivers and the distortion is reduced by as much as about 40%.
