The system’s imaging was outstanding too. I often gauge imaging with Ani DiFranco’s “Everest.” Unusually, DiFranco’s voice images way over, just short of the left speaker, a couple of feet back. The Suprema system nailed this position unambiguously. On this and other tracks, it presented a properly scaled, well-proportioned soundstage, with all the spaciousness captured in the recording, never expanding it. The soundstage ventured just beyond the left or right speaker on occasion—on the two Cowboy Junkies songs, for example—but that was supposed to happen; it’s in the recording.
An important, though not surprising, observation I made during my two listening sessions is that the Suprema subwoofers, while prominent visually, were sonically indistinct: they never sounded detached from the main speakers. Had I not seen the subwoofers in the room, I wouldn’t have been able to tell where they were. Subwoofers do blend seamlessly with main speakers on good stereo systems. I’ve witnessed this many times. The Suprema system just demonstrated how complete such integration can be. Don’t let anyone convince you otherwise.

PLUSSOUND SPC XL & COPPER XL REVIEW
May 31, 2024 Comments Off on PLUSSOUND SPC XL & COPPER XL REVIEW
The Copper XL cable is made up of 36 wire bundles of pure UP-OCC copper that are arranged in a custom Type 6×6 Litz configuration. Each wire bundle has multiple dampening cores, including a large primary centre core. This design results in a soft and pliable cable that maximizes conductivity and performance. The Copper XL cable shares identical mechanical components and design with the SPC XL cable, except that it uses pure copper instead of a silver-plated copper configuration.

Luphonic R2 Turntable €5,290

The R2 table measures 44 x 12 x 35cm (w/h/d), weighs 10kg, and is equipped with height-adjustable feet. Like the R2’s chassis, its 24mm platter is made of solid surface material, and is said to “guarantee detailed reproduction thanks to its low-resonance, homogeneous structure.”
The R2’s synchronous motor is mounted on the lower layer, separately from the platter bearing and tonearm. It is controlled by motor electronics developed in-house at Luphonic — with which, the company states, both the amplitude and the phase shift of the two sine waves are individually adapted to the built-in motor. This is said to “ensure an extremely quiet and low-vibration drive.”

TechDAS Air Force V Premium turntable €20,000

The Air Force V Premium employs a sub-platter system consisting of an inner-sub and an outer platter both precision-machined from solid aluminum alloy A5056, with a total weight of 7kg. The outer platter surface is black anodized with a gloss hairline finish that matches with the silver aluminum plinth. It features a tapered spindle and a “very thin” pad of anti-vibration material applied on top.
The table also offers a 2-channel torque switching circuit that adjusts torque until the rated speed has been achieved. Once the rotation speed is achieved, torque is decreased in order to reduce vibration. A DDS (Direct Digital Synthesizer) serves to digitally synthesize any waveform or any value of frequencies according to the output from the crystal oscillator

ROTEL RB-1582 MKII STEREO AMPLIFIER $1999 REVIEW

Rather than testing total harmonic distortion at full scale at 1kHz as many do, I prefer to understand what the amplifier is doing over a broader range of frequencies and at a more reasonable output level. So, I do a frequency sweep from 10Hz to 20kHz at 5 watts RMS into 8Ω instead. For reference, 5 watts will usually produce somewhere between 85-105dB sound pressure level depending on the connected speaker’s efficiency. I personally find 85dB to be quite loud for extended listening sessions. (I usually listen in the 75-80dB range for longer sessions to protect against hearing damage.) At 5-watt levels, we see that total harmonic distortion is dominated by 3rd-order products up to about 2.5kHz where 2nd-order distortion takes over. At 20kHz, distortion is about 0.04% which is very close to the manufacturer’s published <0.03% THD.
