This quirky but talented all-in-one does an awful lot more right than it does wrong. If you need to connect vast swathes of equipment to it, the HiFi Rose might be a little limited in terms of inputs, but judged by any other metric this is a tremendously accomplished device that leverages all of the considerable promise of the company’s streaming front end and turns it into something that works very well indeed. This still might not be the most recognisable brand name currently in this category, but the virtues of this innovative little box are considerable and it deserves to be on any shortlist at the price.

KEF R3 Meta $2,200 Review

October 31, 2024 Comments Off on KEF R3 Meta $2,200 Review

The KEF R3 Meta is a three-way bookshelf speaker, which incorporates KEF’s Metamaterial Absorption Technology and Uni-Q driver array. The speaker features a 25 mm vented aluminum dome tweeter, a 125 mm aluminum cone for midrange frequencies, and a 165 mm hybrid aluminum bass driver. This combination allows the R3 Meta to cover a wide frequency range from 38 Hz to 50 kHz.

With a nominal impedance of 4 ohms and a rated sensitivity of 87dB, it is a moderately easy to drive speaker. KEF suggests amplifiers with up to 180 Watts power. The R3 Meta measures 422 x 200 x 336 mm (HWD) in total and comes with a weight of 12.4kg. That translates to 16.6 x 7.87 x 13.22 inches and 27.33 lbs. For bookshelf speakers, the R3 Meta is on the bigger side. They easily blended into my room though. Especially with the speaker stands KEF also offers.

The R3 Meta has a three-way crossover built-in, which splits the frequencies at 120 and 2,300 Hz. On the back of the unit, you’ll find two sets of speaker posts to connect your cables to. Between them are two knobs, which you can turn, should you want to bi-wire or bi-amp them. By turning the knob, you basically make a connection between the two posts. You could potentially disconnect them and run individual cables in them, or you could also use your own set of jumper cables.

Ultrasonic Record Cleaners from HumminGuru $799 Review

October 30, 2024 Comments Off on Ultrasonic Record Cleaners from HumminGuru $799 Review

Perhaps counter-intuitively, one should not just up and clean a really dirty disc. Any loose debris should be brushed off (HumminGuru makes a nice one), wiped up with a microfiber cloth, or snagged with a sticky lint roller. There is a filter (actually a screen) at the bottom of the trough designed to trap pet hair, dead insects, or whatever weird stuff detaches from the vinyl. This filter can be removed for cleaning with the multi-purpose tool. The air intake filter is under the power button end, and can be changed without a tool.

OK, we are now ready to insert the LP into the machine, making sure it is seated in the slots at both ends of the trough and the central support above the bottom filter. Select a Clean mode, press the start/pause central button, and the disc will slowly rotate counter-clockwise, in and out of the fluid. The HumminGurus are much quieter than vacuum-style cleaners, but they are not silent and sound slightly different, but our microwave seems louder. The LEDs on the Nova light up sequentially to monitor progress, but neither unit provides an audible signal upon completion. I just use a cheap kitchen timer.

Bryston Model T10 Loudspeaker $18,000 Review

October 30, 2024 Comments Off on Bryston Model T10 Loudspeaker $18,000 Review

Since its release early this year, I’ve been enjoying the Smile’s sophomore album, Wall of Eyes (16-bit/44.1kHz ALAC, XL Recordings). “Bending Hectic” is a standout track, one of the most thrilling rock songs I’ve heard in some time. This tune has sufficient reverb to make it sound spacious, creating an expansive atmosphere. It starts by panning from an electric guitar on the right side of the stage to the sparkle of the cymbals coming from the drum kit on the left. When the strings of the London Contemporary Orchestra enter, the music extends further back, expanding the stage. The song builds slowly, the lyrics describing a vintage sports car cruising the mountainside along the Italian coastline before intentionally driving over a cliff and crashing onto the rocks below.

The tension from the strings as the car descends and the sound of what seems like a jet falling from the sky are nerve-wracking, creating extraordinary suspense. When the car finally reaches the bottom, the music explodes, unleashing the tension that had built to that point. Unsurprisingly, “Bending Hectic” deserves to be heard at high volumes, so as to create visceral impact. The T10s were effortless in their ability to communicate the scale of the track, sounding composed and resolute at volumes I could barely tolerate. When being driven by the more powerful 4B3, the T10s were unflappable. Bryston claims they can play up to 118dB before they start to distort, and while I’d never test the veracity of such a claim, I’ve no reason to doubt it.

Matrix Audio Element M2 $3,099 Review

If you have a larger library the MA Remote app also gives you the option to jump to a specific letter of the alphabet by swiping through them on the right side of your device’s screen.

Something I found very informative is that the now playing screen of the App also shows you the kbit/second, which tells you if the played file is indeed lossless or not.

Of course, Matrix also gives you further ways to use the Element M2. The most notable being Roon. I am an avid Roon user for six years or so, and any streaming DAC that comes into my home must be Roon Ready. It is such a simple integration of products that lets me control all zones at home.

On top of Roon, you can also hit up the Element M2 via Spotify and Tidal Connect. Which is also a super easy and simple process. My fiancée also is always very happy when she can use her Spotify account in our living room HiFi setup.

Apart from smart devices, you can also use the supplied remote control or the touchscreen of the Element M2. On the screen you can swipe left to access the settings menu, by swiping right you go to the shortcut page.

Avantgarde Duo SD iTRON G3 active loudspeaker $66,350 Review

October 28, 2024 Comments Off on Avantgarde Duo SD iTRON G3 active loudspeaker $66,350 Review

https://www.stereophile.com/content/avantgarde-duo-sd-itron-g3-active-loudspeaker

This review involved a certain amount of fighting with room acoustics, a battle that was mostly—intentionally—self-imposed, since I allowed speaker placement to be dictated by the availability of power cords and interconnects. In this contest between speakers and room, the speakers won. The Duo’s DSP didn’t allow me to neutralize all the things my room was doing wrong, but they did manage to fix most things, including the things that bothered me most. The result was superb. Small jazz combos, where the key elements are percussion, horns, piano, and bass, were spot-on. They were articulate, and their timbres were harmonically dense and complex. The small amount of extra bass I dialed in to achieve a pleasing balance in jazz turned out to be great with classic rock; I flipped when I heard the clarity, definition, and presence of Chris Squire’s distinctive bass guitar riffs in “Roundabout,” on Yessongs (Atlantic SD 3-100 LP). If those riffs weren’t burned into my memory before, they most definitely are now.

Defying even positive expectations—such as my expectation that the Duo SD would sound like a typical horn speaker—is usually a good thing, I’ve found. It means that something interesting is going on. Such was the case here. The Avantgarde Duo SD iTRON G3s are truly excellent speakers. I loved spending time with them and would be perfectly satisfied if they could have remained in my listening room long term. (Unfortunately, they departed months ago.) They did everything well and some things extraordinarily well. What shortcomings I heard are best attributed to the room and placement constraints and not to the Duos themselves.

Where Am I?
