HIFIMAN HE1000 UNVEILED $2699 Review

December 28, 2024 Comments Off on HIFIMAN HE1000 UNVEILED $2699 Review

Anyone who has listened to the HE1000 series headphones will recognize the bright aspects of their presentation. However, the HE1000 UNVEILED produces a more balanced sound signature with a flatter frequency response in certain regions compared to past iterations within this series.

I rarely get a set of headphones that once I have heard them I cannot put them down. The HIFIMAN HE1000 UNVEILED did exactly that to me. It seems that the uncovered driver implementation allows the driver to breathe freely and this in turn produces a natural timbre that’s sonically accurate.

Dan Clark Audio NOIRE X Closed-Back $999 Planar

December 27, 2024 Comments Off on Dan Clark Audio NOIRE X Closed-Back $999 Planar

my favorite Dan Clark Audio headphone. Yes the Dan Clark Audio CORINA is still the best sounding, and the Dan Clark Audio STEALTH steps in just below that, as the Dan Clark Audio E3 is yet another slight dip in performance, but the performance gap becomes ever so much smaller as each new headphone is introduced and the NOIRE X checks off every box making it a reference headphone. Expansive soundstage, ruler flat tonal balance, deep subsonic bass, musical honeyed midrange, extreme clarity, the absence of distortion that you didn’t even realize was there before, masterful speed and transient response, layers of detail, realistic timbre to instruments, excellent three-dimensional imaging, and fantastic build quality. All combined, this makes the NOIRE X not only a top-performing headphone but an incredible value to boot.

While the NOIRE X does take a bit of power to drive it worked well with every amp I tried, though your phone, if it has a headphone output, may find it a bit of a struggle, it worked well with mine but I did need to turn it up all the way and still it was not what I would call loud. I will say the clarity is such that you will probably be drawn to listen at volumes louder than you probably should. As it should be, the NOIRE X is completely genre-agnostic and performed well with every style of music. Well done Dan Clark Audio, as this is close to my last review of the year, I can definitely say that this headphone will get my vote for a Product of the Year Award, and my strongest recommendation.

Technics SB-F3 Loudspeaker Review

Even though they are the largest model in the range, the ‘F3s are still far from full-sized and being sealed boxes (ie, not ported) they are easier to place. Well stocked bookshelves are ideal, but failing that, placing them on moderately tall stands in the corners of a reasonably cosy (small!) listening room is a good place to start. A partnering amp in the 40 to 75W class makes a good match, but the surprisingly high sensitivity of these speakers means lower-powered models are not out of the question. Remember, though, that tweeters in particular are more easily damaged by an under-powered amp than one that produces too much output.

Sonus faber Sonetto VIII G2 $7,999 Review

December 26, 2024 Comments Off on Sonus faber Sonetto VIII G2 $7,999 Review

The next track is Yello’s ‘Rubberbandman,’ which places more value on being ultra quick and the ability of a speaker to reproduce deep male vocals without chesty tones nor with weakness of palpability. The song is toe-tapping, rhythmic, and challenging for lesser speakers. Again, the Sonetto VIII’s are fabulous. These are a speaker that challenges for an excellent value, high-end two-channel reproduction machine. The Bass Cello on ‘Night Train’ is exceptional in its rendering, right down to hearing the strings striking the body with complete transparency. If you want detail without harshness, the Sonus faber Sonetto VIII G2 is something you must hear.

We will finish the listening portion of the review with ‘Power,’ a live cut from Marcus Miller. The bass line, percussion, and brass sections combine for a macro-dynamic fest for the ears. It was time to crank up the volume and test out the mettle of these towers when things get really tough. It was no problem for the now termed ‘mighty 8’s’. These are a speaker that can deliver on anything from classical to jazz to rock and yes, even country.

GoldenEar BRX Review

December 26, 2024 Comments Off on GoldenEar BRX Review

The GoldenEar is a technically very proficient speaker. It delivers high resolution and levels of transparency that are off the charts. Couple the high resolution with the black background and you get yourself superb imaging abilities. With the GoldenEar you can pinpoint each instrument in the constructed room. The sound stage it creates is well stretched into width and depth. Its height is also taller, making way for a grand soundscape.

Where the BRX shines to me is in dynamic range. It handles loud and intense passages with ease. The BRX portrays details with care, delivering the finest nuances of the music.

The treble of the GoldenEar is fast, agile and detailed. It breathes loads of air into the rest of the sound spectrum. Highs are precise and clear but can sometimes come across as a touch too forward for my personal taste. At times, the GoldenEar is on the edge of hotness. The detailed response, however, is aiding music that relies on them, like Classical.

World Premiere Review!FiiO S15 Music Streamer

December 25, 2024 Comments Off on World Premiere Review!FiiO S15 Music Streamer

When hearing Blue Trane played back, the sound of Coltrane’s piercing tenor sax was accompanied by a level of talent that other musicians rarely matched. And I was having the FiiO’s reproduce what I can only describe as severely lifelike sent shivers down my spine. I was also in awe that I heard this sound sourced by a $999 streamer. After this album streamed through the Moon 681, it had a bit more body and drew me into the music better. But no way did it sound 12 times better!

And it wasn’t only the sound of Coltrane’s sax that amazed me, but the sound of the other instruments played by the other musicians that he assembled for this session. This included Lee Morgan on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Kenny Drew playing piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones behind the drum kit.

The varying styles the band played on this album ranged from mellow blues, ballads, and upbeat bop; holding all this together was the Coltrane’s fantastic stream of consciousness solos, along with the FiiO S15’s transparent signal that it sent to the linestage, and eventually through my speakers. There is a reason why this album is beloved by so many, even more than 65 years after it was released.

Even though this album wasn’t the best one to judge the soundstage and image talent of the FiiO S15, as I said, I listened to all types of music through this streamer, and both the vast, layered soundstage and pinpoint imaging were present, but only when the recording had these characteristics.

Copland CTA407 $12,490 Review

Stereo imaging is expansive. There is admirable precision in the way this amplifier locates instruments from left to right while also layering them convincingly when it comes to depth. Few rivals we’ve heard can transport us to the recording venue so easily.

We are pleased to report that the built-in phono stage is a good one. As we listen to a range of music, from Mary J Blige’s No More Drama and Bob Marley’s Catch A Fire to Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, it becomes clear that this phono circuit mirrors the ability of the line stages well. Its sonic character remains pleasingly balanced, controlled and revealing. We have no issues with excessive hum or high levels of background noise, which suggests a careful implementation of the phono stage circuitry.
