Chord Electronics Alto Review

April 22, 2025 Comments Off on Chord Electronics Alto Review

This is not new to existing Chord Electronics users, as all their products use color-coding information to display the state of the units.

Left and right of the volume ball you have two smaller ceramic balls which can be pressed. The left one switches inputs and the right one switches outputs. A small sticker will tell you what color corresponds to which input/output.

The unit itself is very compact in size, measuring only 215 x 200 x 57 mm (DWH), which translates to 8.46 x 7.87 x 2.24 inches. It puts a mere 1,946 grams on the scale, which is 4.29 lbs.

On the bottom of the unit are four feet with rubber padding. These can be removed, should you want to rack-mount the Alto in your studio.

 Voxativ Hagen2 Monitor loudspeaker Review

Interestingly, the AF-1.9’s extended high-energy treble and horn-augmented bass power kept the geometric center (footnote 4) of the Hagen2’s passband in approximately the same relative position as that of my Falcon Gold Badges, making the two speakers sound surprisingly similar. The Falcon’s narrower bandwidth rolls off symmetrically top to bottom. The same is true of the wider-bandwidth Hagens.

If you’re an LS3/5a person, you will immediately get what these Hagens are about. Similarly, the Hagen2’s sound character reminded me of what I regard as my #1 most accurate best-imaging in-house transducer: RAAL’s full-range Requisite SR1a ribbon headphones. They do transients, image purity, and uncompressed dynamics with a remarkably similar feel.

World Premiere Review!Synergistic Research PowerCell 14 Power Conditioner $14,495 Review

Presence with the music is an element I cherish, along with resolution and transparency. Presence is the end product of a lot of variables — probably most of them. Think dynamics, inner detail, timbre, shading, and proximity to the soundstage. The result is that the musical image reaches out from behind the plane of the speakers all the way to my ears with a continuous sense of reality. The Synergistic Vibratron goes a long way toward bringing that image forward, but the sound from the speakers has to be excellent to begin with. In lesser systems, the music is confined behind the plane of the speakers and the reality of the recording venue fails to break through that plane to reach the listener. The music is ‘back there’ behind the speakers and not in the room in front of the speakers. The PowerCell 14 brought most of my music right into the room with me. I could play it softer than normal because of the greater resolution and transparency, and I could rock the joint because it was so clean and dynamic. With some listening sessions lasting several hours, I never tired or became irritated unless the recording was really bad — and there is an easy cure for that.

Infigo Audio Streamer Model IS-1 Review

To isolate the streamer from external vibrations, the Cryogen has four footers, which are disks that you attach with (3) small ball bearings between. Instead of standard stainless steel bearings, the Cryogen model comes with beautiful blue sapphire gems (yes, real ones). You attach them (patiently/carefully) when you set up the unit; they come in small velvet sacks and are pre-sized to be equal. I did not experiment with swapping them out for stainless steel ones for a sound comparison; attaching the bearings is a bit dicey—I did not want to be chasing after rolling sapphires in my home!

iFi Audio Valkyrie Review

iFi is the sister-brand of Abbingdon Music Research (AMR) and is headquartered in Southport, UK. In 2012, AMR decided to create an offshoot company that would cater to the needs of portable and personal audio enthusiasts.

In the personal audio space, iFi used to be most known for their elongated micro iDSD Signature combo units, which offer DAC and headphone amplifier functions and a rechargeable battery for fully independent operation. Likely due to their less-than-pocketable size they were well-loved by desktop listeners as well. The culmination of the micro iDSD Signature range is the current iDSD Diablo 2, which I absolutely loved sound-wise.

This week, the Audes team delivered a custom-made DT-1800 power conditioner with a unique twist. Typically designed for the 230 V European mains voltage, this model has been adapted to support the 120 V US standard.
