Why? Because I don’t think I’ve ever heard a CD of symphonic music that is so totally involving. We hear the full orchestra and we hear individual instruments with a clarity and color that connect us directly to Mahler himself. What is he telling us? What pain is his in? Not how low can this speaker go, or can I locate the first violins from the second. Through the YG Hailey 2.2 there is no sense of strain at any volume. The music just emerges in living color. It is by turns angry, explosive and sorrowful. The midrange’s precise definition extends all the way down into the low end which is both colorful and impactful. The brass in particular is so very present and realistic. Mahler’s writing for brass has never been surpassed.

FiiO K17 $899 Review

Positioned between the K9 Pro ESS and K19, the K17 switches from THX amplification to discreet circuitry and 4000mW max output per channel, giving it plenty of power for various headphones.

It sounds dynamic, with plenty of headroom while maintaining good tonal balance and resolution alongside an otherwise full-bodied presentation.

Unlike the cleaner sounding K19, the K17 is more intimate than neutral across the mids. It puts more stress on the treble on the higher gain modes while sounding fuller in bass and quite rounded in treble with the lower gain levels.

Audio Physic Step Loudspeaker $3400 Review

April 7, 2025 Comments Off on Audio Physic Step Loudspeaker $3400 Review

https://www.audiophilia.com/reviews/2025/2/10/audio-physic-step-loudspeaker

The Audio Physic Step at USD 3400/pr. is an extremely competent speaker that checks a lot of boxes yet prioritizes certain aspects of music reproduction. They excel at disappearing and creating a three-dimensional image of music. This creates a sense of discovery and excitement with every listen that does not get old. Supreme insight into the recording and associated upstream equipment suggests these speakers could scale with a system as it evolves. I have two regrets with this review: first that I did not get to pair the Step with a tube amp and second, simply that they will be returning to their distributor. A wonderful musical companion that I will miss dearly. Highly recommended.

Balanced Audio Technology REX 300 Stereo Amplifier $15,000 Review

Up top, the REX 300 managed that balancing trick of sounding both detailed and sweet in the highs, with—I hope I’m not boring you here—excellent resolution of textures and harmonics. Flipping over to another Hip album, Road Apples (LP, MCA 3844804), Johnny Fay’s cymbals—both hi-hat and ride—are beautifully recorded. On “Little Bones,” I was drawn into the mix, bouncing off each instrument in turn. Those cymbals were prominent and juicy, and I could fall into them or let them recede back in my focus at will. I could also turn up the system really, really loud without any ear strain. On the contrary, the REX 300’s silky highs, redolent with crisp clarity in the fundamental and burnished richness in the harmonics, seemed to make loud listening sessions—especially to a magnificent album like Road Apples—a true pleasure.

Hegel Music Systems H190v Streaming Integrated Amplifier $4600 Review

These sonic traits were exemplified when I played “You Make Loving Fun,” from Fleetwood Mac’s classic Rumours on CD (Warner Bros. 3010-2), using the BDP-105. At first, I found the sound a bit too delicate and recessed using the RCA connections, but it jumped up a couple notches in emotion and realism when I used the balanced outputs of the Oppo connected to the Hegel’s balanced inputs. With the XLRs in action, I heard Mick Fleetwood’s hi-hats and Lindsey Buckingham’s guitar extend well beyond the outside edges of the speakers. With the H190v powering the Theva N°2s, the soundstage was centered at, or perhaps just slightly behind, the plane of the speakers, and the H190v highlighted the way certain instruments, like those hi-hats, seemed to shoot out into the room towards the listening position. Christine McVie’s vocals were rendered with power and a natural quality, and the same was true of the band’s massed vocals backing her. Overall, the amp seemed to leave vocals a bit recessed, hanging back a little further in the mix, but didn’t miss out on any sense of realism or detail.
