Pass Laboratories XA200.8 10th Anniversary $44,000/ Review

June 2, 2025 Comments Off on Pass Laboratories XA200.8 10th Anniversary $44,000/ Review

An asset is considered a sound investment when its value/performance curve is continuously upward. Pass Laboratories does not behave like the rest of the high-end audio industry; it had not increased the price of its existing product range since the 2014 launch of the current XA series in real terms. And as competitors rise and fall the XA stands unscathed in its particular performance/value proposition. We will see many more expensive concoctions from others in the coming years but if we are to forecast the future based on track records, none will perform higher for less. If one had begun saving money at some point in time to buy the XA and has now become an owner, the pair of monoblocks will still be an uncontested best buy not only to this day but for many years to come. The XA200.8. A very sound investment indeed

EarMen L-Amp $399 Review

This shows that power is not an issue and can be controlled even with those harder-to-drive units. IEMs, on the other hand, benefit from the IEM switch, darkening the background to a minimum, especially with the notoriously delicate Campfire Audio offerings.

What transpired is a thoroughly organic, yet musical sound emanating forth with deep-reaching bass (especially with Bass+ on) that flowed without bother into the sumptuously tube-like midrange.

The treble reach, while not far-reaching, lends enough presence to expand the height of sound offered. Vocals come across as thick and lush but accurate, finishing off the L-Amp sound signature.

The Reference 330M amplifier not only delivers massive power, slam, detail and refinement from a valve-based design, it also does all this without the trepidation and limitations of the apocryphal tube amp. Ignore the substantial weight and price, and this speaker-tolerant design will slot into a high-end system as easily as any solid-state rival. All this, and the promise of a truly scintillating musical performance.

EAT Fortissimo/F-Note turntable/arm Review

I’ve recently been reviewing mono albums, so it was interesting to hear how the EAT package dealt with the bedlam of psychedelia piled into the centre. The Tangerine Zoo’s eponymous debut [Sundazed/Mainstream LP5673] provided ample fodder for testing both the solidity of central placement as well as the layering of sound. Instead of a morass of crazed instrumentation, it was almost forensic in the way it allowed the listener to separate massed instruments.

Obviously, a mono album such as the smooth jazz quintet of Kenny Burrell & John Coltrane [Craft Recordings/New Jazz CR00720] didn’t present this challenge. Instead, it tested how full could be the single-channel sound. The Fortissimo/F-Note sounded as imposing as one would want a mono-only masterpiece, filling the stage, and I have no doubt that this aspect is a by-product of the deck having been voiced for orchestras.
