Q Acoustics 5040 $1499 Review

We switch to Drake’s Under Ground Kings and the 5040s continue to impress. They convey the music’s momentum with conviction while allowing us to track every word of his distinctive drawl. These towers sound fast and fun. There is plenty of attack but enough in the way of solidity and refinement to avoid accusations of aggression.
This impression of a properly-rounded performer is reinforced as we work our way through our music collection. We spend an afternoon moving from Post Malone to Nitin Sawhney and then finishing with Miles Davis’s Sketches Of Spain, and never do these speakers sound out of their comfort zone.

HIFIMAN AUDIVINA $1,999 REVIEW
October 7, 2023 Comments Off on HIFIMAN AUDIVINA $1,999 REVIEW
When Hifiman launched their HE-R10P and R10D headphones, I was really impressed with the quality of the wooden earcups, and that’s no different now even if the wood looks a bit orangy in my sample. I really dig the shiny chrome like Hifiman logo on the center of the ear cup. According to Hifiman, the cavity constructed of hardwood is exquisitely lacquered and feels like jade to the touch. Through the surface of varnish, naturally formed pores are visible to the naked eye. It’s a nice way to describe the cup finish, and in reality they really do look nice and high-end.

Ayre Acoustics VX-8 power amplifier Review

For current owners of Ayre Acoustics amplification and those hoping to bring the brand’s sound to their system, the VX-8 would be a worthwhile, relatively affordable purchase. The amplifier worked seamlessly with older components including its sibling Ayre K-5xeMP (which sells for $2000–$3000 used), as well as the current Sugden LA-4, and I bet it would sound fantastic with my Shindo Allegro two-box preamp. (Ankle surgery prevented me from extracting the Shindo from its secure space.) With ample power and even sound, the VX-8 gelled easily with the highly efficient Volti Audio Razz loudspeaker. It satisfied my inner music jones while spinning vinyl or streaming digital.
The VX-8 extends Ayre’s reputation for refined amplification that commendably reproduces music of all genres while asserting its singular, special sound, as unique today, under the guiding hand of Ariel Brown, as with its originator, Charley Hansen. A heartfelt, shout-it-from-the-rooftops recommendation.
