By distilling key features from the X9 and X10 models into the X8, Pro-Ject has built a sleek turntable that appears minimalistic but offers a sizeable step up in performance compared to its budget decks. The Quintet Blue MC plays an important part in this, but the match is entirely fortuitous. As a result, the X8 spins your vinyl with minimal distraction and maximum detail, immersing you in the music.

Following the recent positive reception to MQA’s latest technology (SCL6), there has been increased international interest in buying MQA Ltd. At the same time, MQA’s main financial backer is seeking an exit. In order to be in the best position to pursue market opportunities and expedite this process, the company has undergone a restructuring initiative, which includes entering into administration and is comparable to Chapter 11 in the US.

I’ve never auditioned a monoblock quite like the Esoteric Grandioso M1X. Its burnished sound flows effortlessly even through complex passages, and its somewhat laid-back presentation, from top to bottom, helps expose fine detail. The smooth, captivating midrange, which produces no listening fatigue, and impressive bass will speak to many an audiophile. Warm-up time and cost notwithstanding, the Esoteric Grandioso M1X is warmly recommended.

Klipsch La Scala AL5 loudspeaker $13,198 Review

Last, while the La Scalas throw an enormous and cavernous soundstage, they do not create the razor-sharp sonic holographs of the kind conjured by certain contemporary minimonitors. But if that’s crucial to you, you probably aren’t considering these speakers.

In my room, the Klipsches’ frequency response sounded just a shade richer than neutral, with an extended but mellow top end and some added presence in the lower midrange and upper bass. This euphonic voicing made poor recordings easier to listen to and good recordings propulsive and fun. I wouldn’t change it for a flatter one, but frequency-response-graph enthusiasts for whom absolute neutrality is paramount should probably look elsewhere.

Allnic Audio T-1500 MK2 Single-Ended Stereo Integrated Amplifier $8250 Review

Imagine an open sound with beautifully saturated timbres, clear microdynamics and a vast potential for macrodynamics and you have the Allnic T-1500. The bass sound is not flatulent, but its not unnaturally hard and defined like a solid state amp might produce; there is an airiness and space in the treble range that create such a feeling of well being, that one cannot help but grin as one listens. I don’t believe I’ve stated this before, but in listening to the T-1500 I have felt a profound sense of gratitude. A sense that I have been so privileged to hear the music I love and respect played in the intimacy of my home by the finest musicians both living and passed on, and I feel I am sitting within the ranks of the symphonic players themselves.

Puron Power Filter $250 Review

The house is a different story. Multiple appliances, wall warts a plenty, Hue light dimmers, and wifi everywhere. All in the context of a 60-year old house. The bedroom system consists of an LG 80” TV and a pair of Totem Kin Play Tower speakers. Nothing fancy, by any means. This was an immediate change for the better. Just watching the last two episodes of Picard shows less pixelation and noise in the blacks. Seriously, I’d buy one just for this. However, it really did clean up the sound coming through the Kin Plays by an order of magnitude.

McIntosh MP100 Phono Preamplifier Review

April 13, 2023 Comments Off on McIntosh MP100 Phono Preamplifier Review

I did end up doing some ripping of certain albums to my laptop just to experience it with the MP100. I ripped five different albums including the ones I used for reviewing the unit in its primary function. The process was easy, and the results were actually quite impressive. I recently dumped over 3000 CDs because I stream, listen to vinyl and reel to reel these days, and as part of our start to downsizing, getting rid of them seems the wise thing to do. Going back and forth between tracks downloaded through the MP100, and the same tracks on vinyl, I have to say that they sounded amazingly close to the original. The quality of the transfer was really far better than I expected.
