I’ve recently been reviewing mono albums, so it was interesting to hear how the EAT package dealt with the bedlam of psychedelia piled into the centre. The Tangerine Zoo’s eponymous debut [Sundazed/Mainstream LP5673] provided ample fodder for testing both the solidity of central placement as well as the layering of sound. Instead of a morass of crazed instrumentation, it was almost forensic in the way it allowed the listener to separate massed instruments.
Obviously, a mono album such as the smooth jazz quintet of Kenny Burrell & John Coltrane [Craft Recordings/New Jazz CR00720] didn’t present this challenge. Instead, it tested how full could be the single-channel sound. The Fortissimo/F-Note sounded as imposing as one would want a mono-only masterpiece, filling the stage, and I have no doubt that this aspect is a by-product of the deck having been voiced for orchestras.

FiiO FX17 $1499 Review

I would say that they fall between monitor-like and reference-like, but with lots of body and depth served up with a side of musicality, and that makes it enjoyable to listen to. However, their emphasis is placed mostly on clarity and separation.
You get the best of both worlds here with all the detail you could ask for, with the nuances for the analytical, but simultaneously gives a feeling of enjoyment to everyday music listening. It’s not a sterile listen, there is some coloration here as I said, but it’s a tasteful all-around presentation.

With a linear tonal balance, excellent dynamic range, and extreme noise floor which gives you a massive soundstage the Skoll F is a fantastic stage phono stage, and with the ability to control both input impedance and input capacitance along with both single-ended and balanced inputs (for those who have a second turntable for 78s or mono, the switchable inputs is a boon), an LF filter and four position gain control the Skoll F is incredibly versatile and the remote and Forkbeard control which add to the convenience making the Skoll F a stellar choice pitching way above its pay grade.
