Balanced Audio Technology REX 300 Stereo Amplifier $15,000 Review

Up top, the REX 300 managed that balancing trick of sounding both detailed and sweet in the highs, with—I hope I’m not boring you here—excellent resolution of textures and harmonics. Flipping over to another Hip album, Road Apples (LP, MCA 3844804), Johnny Fay’s cymbals—both hi-hat and ride—are beautifully recorded. On “Little Bones,” I was drawn into the mix, bouncing off each instrument in turn. Those cymbals were prominent and juicy, and I could fall into them or let them recede back in my focus at will. I could also turn up the system really, really loud without any ear strain. On the contrary, the REX 300’s silky highs, redolent with crisp clarity in the fundamental and burnished richness in the harmonics, seemed to make loud listening sessions—especially to a magnificent album like Road Apples—a true pleasure.

MBL Cadenza C41/C21 Streamer/Stereo power amp Review

During digital recording, music signals are sampled and then quantised to create the binary code that represents the amplitude of each sample in time. However, if the highest digital values are then normalised close to 0.0dBFs, then it’s entirely possible that a DAC’s oversampling filter will reconstruct signal peaks between samples that notionally exceed 0.0dBFs. It’s important to appreciate that the digital data is not ‘clipped’ but that in the process of upsampling this data, signals are realised that lie above this digital glass ceiling, beyond which is a netherworld of catastrophic clipping and momentary bursts of distortion. Of course, if the interpolator is designed with a few dB of headroom in tow – as is the case with MBL’s ‘True Peak Technology’ – then these peaks, known as ‘intersample overs’, are carried through without clipping.

Yes, the Electrocompaniet is a Norwegian star component. It is a sexy-looking, fatigue-free integrated that plays well above its $6200 price. Its voicing is admirable and will be loved by those who want accurate instrumental and vocal timbre sounding present in real spaces and compatible with a wide range of loudspeakers. In this, the Tau designers have succeeded admirably and receives my warmest recommendation.

Constellation Revelation 2 pre/power amplifier Review

The minor cosmetic refresh to Constellation’s Revelation amplifiers does not reflect the transformation under the hood, where new, precision-engineered power supplies seemingly boost every facet of performance. Play any genre and this system excels, muscular and attacking one moment, insightful and fluid the next. It’s a premium sound worthy of the price, and a fine way to kick off the brand’s new era.
