QUAD Platinum Stereo Amplifier Review

“The overall character of the Platinum amplifier is similar to the Inspire Fire-Bottle vacuum tube amplifier with 6V6 output tubes installed. As noted in the Inspire review, the 6V6 tubes deliver a nice warm midrange, but with noticeably limited treble response. The QUAD amp has very good bass. The Class A Pass XA30.8 amplifier has a very linear and extended treble range that will sound bright and forward in a system that is voiced for the more laid back character of the QUAD amp. These amplifiers are not interchangeable without significant system alterations to maintain a proper tonal balance across the audio frequencies, from low bass to uppermost treble.”

Rega’s Vivacious Brio $995 Review

“The Brio’s 50 watts per channel is enough to drive most speakers to realistic levels, and more than enough to get most apartment dwellers evicted, so you can look forward to distortion, fatigue free music, regardless of how loud or how long you listen. After initial listening with the Totems, we auditioned the Brio with a number of different speakers, some considerably more expensive and came away highly impressed with the level of refinement that this amplifier delivers. TONEAudio Magazine gave their overall Product of the Year award, judging the $995 Brio-R against other components with six-figure pricetags. A side by side comparison with a friend’s last generation Brio-R proves the new model sonically better in every way.’

PEACHTREE AUDIO NOVA 300 INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER $2,500 REVIEW

“Peachtree Audio 2.0 has taken its original goal of affordable lifestyle audio and moved it into affordable high performance audio. That it comes in a handsome, lightweight case is a wonderful added benefit. The new Class-D amps are fantastic and drove my floorstanding 86dB Vandersteen Treo CT’s to stupendous levels. The grip on the low end was wonderful. There was more than enough power to go around. Coming in at a price of £2,195 or $2,500, the Nova 300 is a flat out steal for all the audio capabilities it delivers. If you are upgrading, check it out. If you need to remove the shrine, it can do that too! Highly recommended!”

Octave Audio V 80 SE integrated amplifier Review

September 18, 2017 Comments Off on Octave Audio V 80 SE integrated amplifier Review

“The Octave Audio V 80 SE is one unusual integrated amplifier. It packs a wallop, is perhaps the single most transparent and neutral machine ever to grace my Greenwich Village hi-fi rig, and is so acute to the source that I find myself adjusting the volume for every record. The V 80 SE lacked the tonal color, warmth, and shapeliness of textures I’ve come to love from my Shindo separates, and it could sometimes unleash hard upper-register attacks. But the Octave excelled with a different mien, a different style.

PIONEER A-70DA INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER REVIEW

“To the A-70DA’s credit, they didn’t give me any early indication that the A-70DA focuses on any one genre. So, moving further into my music library with a more open (and quite frankly, more curious) mind, I already had a very good feeling about the result.”

Audio Research Foundation VT80 Stereo Amplifier $8000 Review

” y comparison of the two ARCs’ sounds quickly devolved into nitpicking. Immediately, the D300 came across as sounding not harsh, but brighter in the highs — high-pitched guitars, sibilants, and cymbals all sounded a bit more forward and drew more attention to themselves. Through the D300, the voices of Amy Winehouse and Bono lost some of the beautiful three-dimensionality they had through the VT80, and sounded rawer in detail and flattened in emotional range. When I tried to approximate the volume level of a rock concert, the D300 had greater deep-bass presence that I could feel through its stronger characterization of bass guitar, and the bigger-sounding drums and bass pedals in the Rush recording — no doubt because of its much higher power output.”

VALVET A4 CLASS A MONOBLOCKS 6890 per pair REVIEW

“With the Valvet monoblocks I found myself enjoying some of the most coherent, balanced sound I’ve heard in my listening room. Bass notes are present, separate enough from the midrange to allow you to follow instruments easily without ever thinking they were dominant or disproportionate. Midrange is simply magical, with voices, strings and keys reproduced with a level of reality that makes you relax into the music. Upper frequency resolution is not softened as might be anticipated if the amps were to seem ‘tube-like’ but instead were clean and sufficient to serve musical purpose without drawing unnecessary attention to themselves. In combination, you hear full-bodied, realistic, musical instruments and performers with appropriate dynamic punch and swing.”
