” Moving from totally electronic music to music that was created with only guitar, bass, and drums, I put on the Steve Hoffman remaster of Rage Against The Machine’s self-titled debut album. Listening to Zack De La Rocha scream “Fr-e-e-e-d-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-m, yeah right” through the nova300 and my TADs was excellent. Track ten, titled Freedom, is full of great musicianship all around. The bass lines throughout, the guitar solos, the heavy drums, and unmistakable vocals can all be heard as distinct parts of the whole. On some systems the instruments get lost in a ball of noise and it sounds like your mom is listening to it and saying, “Turn that noise down.” Not the case with the nova300. The amplifier has great control and enough power to reproduce very demanding tracks on somewhat demanding loudspeakers. ”

” There are few downsides, although they are more niggles and observations. Sonically, the dynamic range of the Aavik, although wide, is not quite as authentic and edge-of-the-seat as some of the best valve amplifiers out there. However, in terms of solid-state designs, the U-300 Unity is hard to beat. Trivially, a balance control would be nice, but might undermine the minimalism of the overall project as it might require its own button. The ability to process high-resolution to 24/192 might prove limiting in an audiophile world obsessed by 32/384 and DSD files – I hope this is not the case, because I’d rather choose an amp that sounded this good over the (often undefined) promise of superior sound quality from ever higher resolutions.”

The latter trait may be to do 5777“ how this DAC has completely unsuppressed dynamics, with this letting rip so that the latter components in the audio chain have a lively and musical canvas to work on. That being said I am definitely aware of some of the attributes this DAC has. What it does let seep through to the rest of the audio chain are all starting points for awesome sound.”

” Evaluating DACs has become one of my toughest reviewing tasks. In my experience, the differences are on the margins. Overall, the two DACs offered similar sound quality. I felt that the HA-1 was just a bit more transparent, but with softer bass than the Neo ACE. Neither difference gave one model a significant advantage over the other, but if you listen more to amplified music, particularly rock, you’ll probably prefer the Simaudio.”
