Arcam FMJ A49 Stereo Integrated AmplifierReview

” I’ve been listening to Arcam products for around 30 years, and there’s absolutely no avoiding the fact that this one came as a bit of a surprise, as it sounded rather good right from the start. When cold it can sound slightly brash, but it warms up quite quickly and this all but disappears. Although I feel that there’s a hint of a lower treble hardness, and some emphasis in the sibilant region of voices, this only shows up when the material played has a tendency to excite this area too. ”

MARK LEVINSON NO585 INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER REVIEW
December 22, 2015 Comments Off on MARK LEVINSON NO585 INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER REVIEW
The No585 uses an R-2R resistor ladder network for the volume control. This is widely regarded as the best volume control topology out there. Of course, Harman has made improvements to lower the resistance of this circuit and by using special analog switches with very low voltages in routing the currents through the circuit.”

SIMAUDIO MOON NEO 430HA REVIEW

” As any good headphone amplifier will have, this has a gain switch, which when using with any high impedance (HD800) or planar magnetics (Audeze and ZMF) has been left on High (20dB) in opposed to low (14dB). It also has a crossfeed option, which like when I have come across before I prefer to leave off. It just seems to make things more distant, not so much open or bigger. Inside the amp itself Sim seem especially proud of the two transformers that make up the oversized power supply and the 8 stages of DC regulation that come with it. Considering there is a Moon range of power supplies it surely seems like they probably have good inkling on how to get power efficiently to a amp stage.”

Jeff Rowland Design Group • Model 825 Stereo Amplifier $32,000 – Review
December 20, 2015 Comments Off on Jeff Rowland Design Group • Model 825 Stereo Amplifier $32,000 – Review
” The Model 825’s sonic profile begins from a very deep well of musical detail that’s free of accompanying noise. It is a model of directness — of neutrality — presenting the music the way it is on the recording with uncommon resolution and purity, and resolving space with singular acuity. And just when you’ve come to appreciate all of this, you realize how liquid and non-electronic it sounds, offering up its gobs of detail with abundant naturalness that at first seems out of place. It is a true connoisseur’s product; beautiful and thoughtfully made, it does its proclaimed job, amplifying a signal, without even a minor issue. It hasn’t just single-handedly redeemed class D for me, but made me take it seriously again, something I would never have imagined without experiencing it for myself.”

” It’s a relatively quiet circuit, one that keeps all the good sonic points we noted in the line stages. There are four line-level inputs, one tape out and a single preamp output, should you need to add a bit more muscle”

Paradigm Premium Wireless Series PW AMP Stereo Amplifier Reviewed
December 19, 2015 Comments Off on Paradigm Premium Wireless Series PW AMP Stereo Amplifier Reviewed
” Frankly, the sonic differences between Anthem Room Correction set to its defaults and tweaked to heck and back to suit my own preferences were minimal at best. The differences between the performance of the PW AMP with and without ARC, though, were substantial. Switching back and forth between room correction and no room correction is a simple matter of holding the Mute button for a few seconds, which makes for pretty easy comparison. Without ARC, bass performance was a wee bit less even, a little less controlled, and some mixes had a tendency to be a little out of whack.”

Jadis Orchestra Reference Mk.II integrated amplifier Review
December 15, 2015 Comments Off on Jadis Orchestra Reference Mk.II integrated amplifier Review
“I wished for a bit more texture, a little more string and wood—qualities that aren’t lacking in my EL34-powered reference amps, the Shindo Corton-Charlemagne monoblocks, or in other low-power EL34 amplifiers of my acquaintance. Those impressions endured throughout Mulligan’s baritone-sax solo: The Jadis was musically nimble, easily following his counterpoint to Baker’s distinctly full-bodied trumpet solo. The sound of Mulligan’s horn was sufficient in texture, but only just so; I admit to a fondness for excess in that department, and I left the table very slightly hungry.

Auralic Aries and SBooster Linear Power Supply
December 14, 2015 Comments Off on Auralic Aries and SBooster Linear Power Supply
“And that is what the SBooster is doing with the Aries. It is letting the Aries sing and swing. Dynamics, space, presence… damn. Now anyone using the power supply included with an Aires is doing really well. It is not like you are sucking it here as I stand by what I wrote about the Aries previously. It is killer with its own power supply and it is not like you are sitting there asking yourself how it can be improved, what is missing, what is that I am hearing and what can I can do to make it better, etc. No, the stock Aries with its power supply rocks, but for sure it can be elevated to compete with the way bigger, badder boys by spending more money on a better NAS and so on—tweak it. And certainly by adding the SBooster… yeah baby, now we are clearly hanging with the really, really cool people at school. Check me out. Highly recommended for anyone with an Aries.”

Mark Levinson No.585 integrated amplifier Review $12,000

” Immediately drawn into and involved in the music, I soon realized that I’d inadvertently increased the volume until the No.585’s display read 62dB. Mick Fleetwood’s drums were rendered with enough power and solidity that the Quads began to cut out on peaks. Soon, the No.585 went silent, and its display announced that it had an overheat fault condition. Sure enough, the areas of the top plate nearest the internal heatsinks were almost too hot to touch. I switched the amp into standby, but it continued to display the fault message. I reached around to the back and flipped the main power switch, waited one minute, then flipped it back on. The No.585 began its normal turn-on sequence: I hadn’t broken it. Whew!”
