The CSA 100 is a rare beast in hi-fi terms in that it manages to be almost absurdly competent, but never feels dull or soulless in doing so. There’s nothing within the extensive specification that feels anything other than exactingly thought out, but beyond that it rarely fails to delight across its many inputs and a very broad spectrum of music. Throw in the superb build and rather lovely appearance, and you have an absolutely outstanding amplifier that’s likely to delight anyone who spends any time with it.

Van Alstine’s vision for a better, more powerful monoblock amp has come to life with the DVA M750 Monoblock. I know of no other monoblock amp on the market, at a price of only $5598/pair that can perform like this, with such power, and finesse, and endowed with such a large quiet soundstage presented with exceptional clarity. Very highly recommended.

Audio Research I/50 integrated amplifier $5500 Review

I experienced one bug with the amplifier’s control software. Occasionally, the amplifier spontaneously went into standby mode, at least as indicated by the Lexitubes’ single dots, while the tubes all remained powered up. This could be some sort of tube-protection feature except that it didn’t seem related to playback level; the average voltage the last time it happened was <3V RMS, and it never occurred during high-power measuring on the test bench. Pressing the Power button on the amplifier’s top panel, after waiting the requisite 3 minutes, always brought the I/50 back into action.

Audio Note UK M2 Linestage / Preamplifier And Conqueror Power Amplifier Review
September 6, 2023 Comments Off on Audio Note UK M2 Linestage / Preamplifier And Conqueror Power Amplifier Review
As I continued to listen to music with the Audio Note UK M2 linestage and Conqueror stereo amplifier pairing, this intimate experience prevailed, no matter the recording or the medium. Before I knew it, there were stacks of records and CDs in my living room because I was too eager to grab a new album before putting the old one away. My listening sessions had become tranquil meditative experiences. Now I was sitting in a Sukhasana pose on the forest floor. The woodland creatures moved past me, unconcerned with my presence. Shure, I had to continue along the path at some point, but at that moment, I was happy where I was.
I don’t know how much of a Music lover Robert Frost was. Heck, I’m not sure I truly understand “The Road Not Taken”. I do know that my exploration of high-end audio has been a very interesting journey. I’ve been really lucky to meet people, in person and online, who have been kind with their time and helped me find what I was looking for. Is my journey over? Not by a long shot. Right now, I just want to thank all of the good people of Audio Note UK who have been kind enough to fulfill a long-time dream and allow me to listen to their equipment in my home. My time in the woods will come to an end soon. I just need to enjoy it before I have to move on.

Technics SU-GX70 $1999 Review

Technics has crafted a system that’s appealing, hugely versatile and delivers plenty of musical prowess. The SU-GX70 is a refined, musical system, if not quite the all-rounder in sound quality. If you’re after one-box convenience with all the music-playing methods you can wish for (and don’t require a huge amount of bass or power for your music) then it’s certainly worth considering.

KECES S300+ Stereo Amplifier $3499 Review
September 2, 2023 Comments Off on KECES S300+ Stereo Amplifier $3499 Review
After we had listened to the SVSs, we then drug out his pair of JBL ES80s and swapped out the SVSs for these for comparison. We were instantly disappointed. Not in the S300+ mind you, but in the ES80s! Just as the S300+ revealed what the SVSs could do, it also revealed what these ES80s couldn’t do. Again, I go back to the word “revealing.” With the S300+, you’ll either fall in love with your speakers, or you’ll want to throw them off a cliff. (Hopefully the former!)
All told, I have only about 20 hours of use so far. I think it’s just starting to break-in, so some of my comments should be considered to be provisional. As is sometimes the case with higher end gear like this, it gets better with continued use. At least that’s what my ears are telling me. (Think “bloom”!) In addition to all the aforementioned titles above, I’ve also been enjoying the remasters of Andre Prévin’s recordings of Shanker, Gershwin, Prokofiev, and Tchaikovsky. It’s a real joy to listen (and re-listen) to these on a better version of my own speakers thanks to the KECES S300+.
Some final thoughts on the KECES S300+
Remember to place this amp in a very well-ventilated area. I have mine sitting on a credenza about a foot away from the DAC. Nothing else nearby. I would advise against putting this into any type of fully or semi enclosed cabinet. If you do plan on putting it somewhere other than out in the open, a small quiet low RPM fan wouldn’t be a bad idea. I’m thinking about placing a spare 140mm PC fan on top of the unit just to assist in the convective airflow for cooling.
If you’re facing a choice to either upgrade your speakers or upgrade your amplifier, choose the latter. Upgrade the amplifier first. As the KECES S300+ shows, you likely have no idea what your current (or new) speakers can do if your amplifier is sub-par compared to the true capabilities of the speakers.

Musical Fidelity M8xi Review

For those power-hungry obsessives of the opinion that no matter how much power is on tap it’ll never be enough, or those that are simply looking for an integrated suitably flexible that they can invest in impossibly finickity and insensitive loudspeakers in the future, the M8xi obviously ticks all the right boxes. However, to consider it a brute that’s solely capable of boom and bombast is to miss the point. In the same way football commentator’s so often note: “He’s got a surprisingly good touch for a big man” if any forward over six feet tall shows a semblance of ball control, this is an accomplished performer that’s just as comfortable precisely replicating the smaller lighter details as it is the big stuff. Fast, flexible and impressively faithful to the recording, it’s a superb amplifier and deserves to be right near the top of any wishlist

Pass Labs X260.8 Monoblock Amplifier Review $14,250 Review
August 19, 2023 Comments Off on Pass Labs X260.8 Monoblock Amplifier Review $14,250 Review
It was now time for my “Demo of Destruction” playlist, again. By early afternoon it was time to test some limits. This time, Bassnectar’s “Above and Beyond” provided the visceral chest-thumping that I’ve come to expect. Playing through the rest of the “Demo of Destruction” playlist; the X260.8s delivered the goods. At one point, my spouse requested (repeatedly), a lowering of the volume; which was politely ignored (she’s not my mother!). As the cost of a good divorce lawyer would empty my new speaker fund; I decided to switch back to vinyl.
