McIntosh MCT450 and McIntosh D150 – REVIEW

“This couple of players definitely has the sense of the rhythm. It is apparent while listening to “Girl Talk” by Oscar Peterson (SACD Universal). The recording by Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer gives us a pleasant piano and drum cymbals very accurate. The charleston seems to be right here between the loudspeakers. ”

” The simple fact of the matter is that, as I stated above, if you look at Arcam’s UDP411 as a Blu-ray player first and foremost, it doesn’t really stack up all that well against cheaper options that deliver equal video performance (and equal audio performance via HDMI), along with a host of streaming video and audio apps and other connectivity benefits to boot.”
Pioneer Elite BDP-88FD Blu-ray Player $2,000 Review

” Pioneer’s BDP-88FD is an excellent universal player. Built like a brick house. Equipped with outstanding 4K video upconversion. Capable of making CDs and SACDs sound awesome. That said, as much as I appreciate Pioneer’s flagship, I find it hard to recommend buying a $2,000-listed universal player when the UHD Blu-ray format is due out in just a matter of months (we hope). Even if I considered the Pioneer based solely on audio performance, my music-listening habits have largely migrated to computer and streaming audio. Like many other folks, I find that it’s a rare day when I play an actual CD, let alone an SACD”

“Compared with the CD stage of my Marantz SA-15S2 Special Edition SACD player, the Audio Space seems to go deeper, with drier and more convincing bass. The sound is more open and airy–certainly less tonally dense in the midrange–with a firmer foundation below and more sparkle up top. In other words the Audio Space is not rolled off à la Marantz. It is more agile, more neutral, less romantic. In a word, more accurate. It loves to rock. It has ample grunt down below.”

” There are a few manufacturers who seem to be working toward a better understanding of remote functionality and one of them is Gryphon. On the one hand they offer the Mirage preamplifier, a product in which the whole touch-sensitive front panel is free-standing, allowing it to be taken over to the listening seat. ”

” That’s why most upper-end products come with some carved-from-solid brick, generally littered with tiny identical buttons and so heavy it risks damaging whatever you put it down on. To me, that’s just dumb, but hey, somewhere along the line, weight and quality seem to have become equated. These things are crazy expensive to make and just like fancy Swiss watches, you can buy a plastic alternative that actually works just as well.”
Marantz’s budget CD player and amplifier Review

“As you might expect, this Marantz combo sounds big, fat and warm. Both components have been voiced to hide their budget origins as well as is possible, and in this Marantz has succeeded. They simply don’t sound like your average, cheap, screechy budget hi-fi separates. Indeed, they’re so good that you can put them through some pretty accomplished, high-end speakers and they still won’t give the game away. In absolute terms, all they ever get to being is a bit diffuse and opaque – in short, if you want vast tracts of detail, then buy something better!”

“As if that weren’t testing enough, we dug out a live recording of Linkin Park and were equally impressed at the amount of clarity and definition it extracted against the background crowd noise – even if the spacious soundstage seemed a bit forsaken.
