“By the end of the evening, we agreed that Noah’s table was superior in portraying body and richness, the timbre of music, but that the difference between the Kuzma system and the Lampizator was much smaller than either of us had imagined. In terms of clarity, the distance was even narrower. ”

Audiolab M-DAC+ REVIEW

” Do you see what’s going on here? Although there are still audible differences between DACs, and there will always be a cost-no-object segment to provide even wider perspectives, the subjective differences in quality are becoming quite small. It seems evident that over the years, DAC quality has really improved a lot, especially in the more affordable end. Especially in the field of refinement and resolution, one needs not spend zillions anymore”

PS Audio DirectStream Memory Player Review
February 7, 2017 Comments Off on PS Audio DirectStream Memory Player Review
“Even though this review was really a review of the DirectStream Memory Player and the DirectStream DAC, I felt that I was able to get a good feel for the operation and sound of the Memory Player. PS Audio has done their homework with the release of the DirectStream Memory Player that I found to be a solid multi format performer. I experienced impressive sonic performance in combination with the PS Audio DirectStream DAC utilizing the I2S through HDMI outputs.”

MonoRice 1X USB DAC – Review
February 3, 2017 Comments Off on MonoRice 1X USB DAC – Review
“Comparing the MonoRice 1X with the twice costly but now discontinued AudioQuest DragonFly v1.2 (US$149), the former can’t quite match the latter’s more relaxed repose and spacious headstage. I paired both with the great arbiters of IEM audio truth, Campfire Audio’s Andromeda, to conclude that the DragonFly v1.2 sounds considerably smoother and W I D E R on headstaging than the Monny-Come-Lately.”

DCS VIVALDI VERSION 2.0 REVIEW
February 3, 2017 Comments Off on DCS VIVALDI VERSION 2.0 REVIEW
” Much of the emphasis of these Version 2.0 upgrades is targeted at improving the ability of users to employ high-resolution sources. I personally continue to like playing CDs, but the industry is clearly moving with the introduction of servers. So when Quick proposed setting me up with a router and a NAS, I was eager to give it a go, especially because I have a cache of private recordings bestowed upon me by recording engineer Peter McGrath that I always enjoy playing.”

Questyle CMA600i Headphone Amp/DAC $1,299 Review
January 16, 2017 Comments Off on Questyle CMA600i Headphone Amp/DAC $1,299 Review
”
The Questyle CMA600i succeeds brilliantly on every level. It sounds great, is incredibly versatile and is visually elegant to boot. This is as good as it gets, and should you build a system around it; I suspect you will pass this one down to a family member. Well done Mr. Ball!”

Schiit Modi Multibit vs. Modi 2 Uber Review
December 20, 2016 § 1 Comment
” For those looking into the field of low cost DACs, some options do appear. Some of the more successful models take the form of small USB sticks with a single 3.5mm output. The new Modis set themselves apart in this regard with a full range of digital inputs and the more elegant RCA line level output for an approach that more precisely mirrors high end separates ready for an amplifier. Perhaps unheard of at this pricepoint, the application of the Schhit Magni 2U gets separates on the desktop for headphones at a $250 price tag ($200 if you opt for the older Modi). The emulation here has its appeal. Isolation has its benefits. The pluses stack up in fine order next to a cost that doesn’t stack very high at all’

Auralic Altair Wireless Streaming DAC $1899 – Review
December 20, 2016 Comments Off on Auralic Altair Wireless Streaming DAC $1899 – Review
” The Altair’s extended treble energy is obvious. It’s a little on the lean side; and can get a bit edgy when the volume is cranked. Although I felt the deepest octaves suffered at times from a slight lack of definition, overall bass reproduction was excellent; solid, front and center, and tuneful—seriously dynamic bass that reaches into deep space.”

dCS Rossini Player & Rossini Clock
December 3, 2016 Comments Off on dCS Rossini Player & Rossini Clock
” The combination of the dCS Rossini Player and Clock produced what was, overall, the best sound from digital I have experienced in my system. While not as laid-back as the sound of my long-term reference PS Audio DAC, it didn’t suffer from the glare that often accompanies digital components that concentrate on resolution at the expense of listenability. With the Rossini I got both, whether from CDs or files played via Ethernet or USB.”
