” Another feature I discovered in the MiND App is the ability to access radio stations through vTuner. I really enjoyed this. I have a Magnum Dynalab MG-807T internet runner that sounds very good particularly given its all tube triode output stage, but can’t received HD radio broadcasts, which the 280D can, and it really doesn’t offer practically remote control. I hate to sound lazy, but I often listen to internet radio late at night, and it really is awfully nice to change stations using the MiND iPad App. I haven’t decided yet, but I may let go of the MD-807T and put the 280D in its place because it does so many things so well. I still have the Aurender N100H going into my Ayre DX-5 DSD through a stealth USB cable in my two-channel home theater system. I think that sounds slightly better than the 280D with MiND module but it is difficult to tell because we are talking about two very different system with the home theater system being much more forgiving, and the N100H/Stealth USB/DX-5 DSD combination cost a whole lot more than the 280D with the MiND module. A fairer comparison would be the 380D with the MiND module, but I am already really very happy with the 280D, so much so that I decided to keep it as my current streaming solution for the main system.”

Chord DAVE $13,000 Review

“The layering of the orchestra in its proper location and sound staging was wide and deep with air and space between each section of the orchestra. The DAVE just played music. The sound was more like listening to a analogue record without any of the drawback that you would get listening to vinyl and had the explosive dynamics and range that only digital can provide. The DAVE sound was not digital in any way. The musicality and tonality were exceptional.”

Audiobytes Black Dragon Amp/Dac Review

“The Black Dragon amplifier puts out a maximum 700mW into 32 ohms and the less efficient HE-1000 performs best with amplifiers that have high current and can deliver over watt or more of clean power. The Dragon still was able to drive it without running out of steam on jazz or acoustic recordings but was challenged during large-scale dynamic recordings. Connick’s vocal and Marsalis’ sax sounded live and organic. The HE-1000 had them hovering in space and gave me that out of head experience that I often get while listening to this magnificent headphone,”

Auralic Aries and SBooster Linear Power Supply

December 14, 2015 Comments Off on Auralic Aries and SBooster Linear Power Supply

“And that is what the SBooster is doing with the Aries. It is letting the Aries sing and swing. Dynamics, space, presence… damn. Now anyone using the power supply included with an Aires is doing really well. It is not like you are sucking it here as I stand by what I wrote about the Aries previously. It is killer with its own power supply and it is not like you are sitting there asking yourself how it can be improved, what is missing, what is that I am hearing and what can I can do to make it better, etc. No, the stock Aries with its power supply rocks, but for sure it can be elevated to compete with the way bigger, badder boys by spending more money on a better NAS and so on—tweak it. And certainly by adding the SBooster… yeah baby, now we are clearly hanging with the really, really cool people at school. Check me out. Highly recommended for anyone with an Aries.”

PS Audio NuWave DSD DAC review

December 4, 2015 Comments Off on PS Audio NuWave DSD DAC review

” A week was all that was required for break-in/warm-up. For listening proper, I placed the NuWave DSD DAC on four Isoblocks to rigidly decouple it from the dullard MDF shelves of my Salamander four-tier rack. A Mytek USB cable connected the NuWave to a MacBook running Audirvana+. A one-meter pair of Analysis Plus Copper Oval RCA cables connected the NuWave to a Shindo Allegro preamp. All review cuts (unless otherwise noted) were AIFF files, ripped from CD.”
