“I found no issues without having a gain switch on the ONE. The range of the volume control was very wide, so the ONE worked fine with both my Shure SE-425 IEMs and my Sennheiser HD-600s (I didn’t listen much with the 600s, but I wanted to be sure the ONE would drive them successfully). Battery life was very good. I did all my testing on a single set of batteries. While a rechargeable battery like all the other amps in this roundup is nice, good old-fashioned AAs have their advantages. If they’re flat, all you need to do is put in a new set. If one of the other amps is flat, you have no choice but to recharge, which isn’t much of an option if the plane is boarding right now”

“And if one needs name-dropping to be impressed, how about Jim Kinne, famed former Wadia Digital designer? That’s a name recognisable to hi-fi buffs who regularly read one, or both, of the “big two” US audio print magazines.”

” All the vocals were a bit highlighted, which gave them only sensuality. Even voices usually quite difficult to reproduce, such as Asaf Avidan, Jon Anderson, Bruce Springsteen singing falsetto, sounded extremely engrossing. But not only men’s voices got an extra portion of sensuality. There was some “Lumin Touch” in the sound – everything was consistent that it sticked me to the speakers for hours. I cann’t omit electronic music, especially this – let’s call it classic – from the old days where analogue synthesizers dominated. Jarre, Vangelis, Detlef Keller – due to the consistency and sound temperature of Lumin, they were all exceptional.”

“I ran in the review unit for a few months on and off before sitting down to enjoy listening for many more weeks thereafter. I used the DAC-200ts during my review of the Bel Canto REFStream and even gave it some miles with the Auralic Aries as part of its break-in process. Throughout all of this time, yea I even aurally peaked for pleasure during those first few weeks, the Cary DAC delivered the musical goods. Its sound is big, solid, well-defined, rich, and musically engaging. It is fuller sounding than the recently reviewed NAD C 510 (see review), and even out body slams the Auralic Vega.”

“I listened to an old standby: The title track of Norah Jones’s Come Away With Me (24-bit/192kHz FLAC, Blue Note). Like that cognitively dissonant piano, Jones’s voice sounded spookily clean and natural. Had she been actually standing there, singing right into my ear, I’m not sure I’d have heard any more detail or air or depth. But for the absence of her breath tickling my ear hairs, I could have sworn she was right next to me”

“Last but not least the stunning factor would have to be the staging. Many a times studio based products is overly focused on the mixing and mastering to allow the engineers to perfect their production. Some might had forgetten that music enjoyment is not just based on tonal balance and the sense of scale and space is a major factor as well. This is where the BDA-2 outclassed that aspect astoundingly. The soundstage was simply phenomenal with over the top instrument separation which gave such scale and space that one is often looking for.”

” Now, moving inside of the chassis – this is where the magic happens. The Exogal team has an extensive history – not only in high-end audio design but also other disciplines like GPS, broadband networking, and various other non-audio fields. This allows for a different approach, a road less traveled by designers who lack this experience. ”

“The soundstage is fairly compact, but it’s precisely layered and stable. The DAC in our Naim NDS/555PS streamer certainly goes wider, having more of a sense of space, but the Zodiac still satisfies.”

” The Nēo 260D once again reaffirms why MOON gear is so popular among the TONEAudio staff. Most audio companies do one type of equipment well—not so with Simaudio; each of its products is first-rate for its price point.”
