Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital Headphone Amp/DAC Review

“I hadn’t expected much from the Sennheiser: it has a reticent top end of its own and I’d expected that the combination with the Pre Box would be overkill. Instead, their mutual smoothness in the presence region let me push the volume up enough to compensate for the Sennheiser’s modest bass, making the sound bigger and beefier than it normally would be in everything from symphonic staples like Beethoven’s Fifth (Carlos Kleiber, Vienna Philharmonic, 24/88.2 FLAC) to rock stompers like Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog” (24/92 FLAC). Images, though not strongly outlined, were generously scaled, beautifully fleshed out, and darkly colorful, giving extra intensity to lushly arranged tracks like Nick Drake’s “Riverman” and “Hazy Jane II” (24/96 FLAC).

SCHIIT AUDIO LYR 3 REVIEW

“With the solid state ‘tube’ the sound changes to a more punchy bass, with even wider extension into lows and highs. You will trade musicality for linearity in the lower midrange. Don’t think you’d be getting a typical solid state amplifier then, because the discrete design of Lyr 3 will still give out a very harmonic and lush sounding amplifier with smooth mids. The biggest change to me though was the treble, which has gotten sparklier and crisper with the LISST installed. The overall sound lost some of its richness, but gained precision and accuracy in the end. Which is also very nice if you’re looking for that.”

BURSON Class-A headphone amp Review

“The Bang is a powerful yet compact power amplifier that would be at home in both a PC based system as well as a HiFi system. If you partner it with the Play you have a remote from which you can adjust the volume, with the Fun you only have the volume pot. The Bang does not shy away from a challenge and it will do justice to many easier to driver speakers out there, it sounds a lot better than the cheaper integrated amps around the same price, the only downside is you will need a pre-amp to match the amount of inputs you need”

Sony TA-ZH1ES Headphone Amp Review
September 7, 2018 Comments Off on Sony TA-ZH1ES Headphone Amp Review
“The only ergonomic issues I found with the Sony TA-ZH1ES were ones of control and display placement. Because the only info display on the Sony TA-ZH1ES is on its top panel, you need to locate the Sony TA-ZH1ES so that you’re looking somewhat down at it. Also, some of the critical controls, including the source and output selector buttons, are also on the top panel, so the Sony TA-ZH1ES needs to be in arm’s reach unless you use the supplied remote exclusively. Yes, the Sony TA-ZH1ES comes with a small wand remote that lets you access basic control functions of input, output, and volume level. The remote also lets you turn on and off the DSD mastering and DSEE HX functions, so you can drive yourself nuts comparing them.”

ASTELL&KERN ACRO L1000 REVIEW
August 24, 2018 Comments Off on ASTELL&KERN ACRO L1000 REVIEW
“I’ve never been the biggest fan of DAC/AMP combo’s but the Acro L1000 has won me over. AK gave it a high end, audiophile tuning and the result is very impressive. Not only does the L1000 sound great it also looks gorgeous, unlike anything you’ve ever seen. On top of that it’s also a very versatile unit that has a large number of single end and balanced outputs, as well as a 15W/channel speaker output.”

Woo Audio WA33 Balanced Headphone Amplifier $15,000 Review

“There have been several songs that have been thrown to the zeitgeist of audiophile tracks as references for music that fully represents entire spectrum of sound for testing purposes. During a tour of Harmen’s testing facilities in California, researcher Sean Olive expressed a nomination for Tracy Chaplin’s Fast Car. While not the most uplifting song every penned, it does a fine job as an amplifier illuminator. Though the WA33 the polished dynamics of the tube driven amp really laid the foundation for a capability to be drawn into the music. The bass was so supportive of the rest of the mix, the overall presentation sounded accurate, but also fun. If one was to break down the feeling into more certain terms, you could look at two separate, but intertwined ideas. 1. its relaxed 2. its intimate. This Woo isn’t relaxed in the sense that it has opened its grip on transparency, control or otherwise, but rather it finds a balance between the analytical nature of pureform detail pass-along and the slowly creeping edge of overpopulating the notion of information presentation. It’s the emotional equivalent of someone saying “relax, we got this” before coordinating a game winning play. There both confidence and authority in the delivery. The intimacy is derived from a robust tonal structure that fills in the lost spaces between reality and recreation. T

HEADAMP GILMORE LITE MK2 CLASS A HEADPHONE AMPLIFIER – REVIEW
August 2, 2018 Comments Off on HEADAMP GILMORE LITE MK2 CLASS A HEADPHONE AMPLIFIER – REVIEW
“It is rare that I come away so impressed with a piece of gear. While many other amplifiers struggle to overcome basic issues like cheap parts, inconsistent volume controls, sketchy build quality, etc., here comes a really nice piece of gear that does absolutely everything well for the very reasonable price of $499. I applaud HeadAmp for their attention to detail and quality in the build – it is thorough and if there is a weak spot, I haven’t found it yet. This is the polished, professional level of quality I wish we could expect from every manufacturer, but alas, that is not the case.”
