“For the purposes of this review, Justin sent along a pair of Zu Cubes so that I could evaluate the speaker outputs. To this end, I set up the Mogwai and the Zu Cubes in my living room. After quite a bit of tweaking, I was able to arrive at a configuration for the Cubes (against the far wall, slightly off axis) that provided a reasonable soundstage. ”

“You could go ahead and ignore all settings and still have a formidable audio chain with great dynamics, high resolution, and amazing matchability. But if you know that you will ignore the ADC and all the DSP functions altogether, you can find some systems that might punch even harder for the money. As my comparison in the Lake People Reference Series review shows, there is a slightly better performance to be found at the same price point, but this is nitpicking.”

” he first thing you notice is the uber clarity, no other headphone in my experience comes even close. The music’s impulses and emotional power feel stronger. To fully appreciate the HE 1, you must listen in a dead quiet room so you can hear deep into the music. You will be practically there with the musicians, so with the best recordings you’ll hear the acoustic “space” of the studio or concert venue, but any background noise like the whoosh of your room’s air conditioning or outside traffic roar will mask some of the HE 1’s resolution of fine detail.”

” Imaging is similarly precise, surely aided by the fantastic transient response. Cranking up Neil Peart’s famous drum solo from Rush’s Moving Pictures classic “Tom Sawyer”, I was able to pick out the individual locations of the cymbals in Peart’s kit with a stunning degree of accuracy. The soundscape width and height are also quite good, leaving plenty of room for all the sounds to layer in neatly together. The depth is well above average too, relative to other solid state options at the price point. Combined, they form a well-balanced and spacious soundscape, an open stage with a three-dimensional shape that didn’t feel like it was off in any one direction.”

“The MicroZOTL2.0 is also unusual in that it generates very little heat and owing to the low-stress design enjoys a 10,000 hour tube life. It must also be noted that with tube rolling, the sound characteristics of the MicroZOTL2.0 are susceptible to change with various accounts claiming for the better. Having not tested any of the NOS tubes myself, though, it is difficult to recommend any.”

“The best thing about this Questyle quartet is they all go after the same goal of neutrality and accuracy; the performance of one goes with and builds upon the performance of the others, and there’s a sense that is you start with any one device, the others will logically follow. If you have a pair of headphones good enough to warrant a CMA800R, they are good enough to benefit from balanced drive, in which case two CMA800Rs are the logical choice, and that means a CMA800P is the logical choice in driving them, and the DAC is the obvious model to deliver the best signal to that trio. Or, you start with the DAC for its sheer fidelity, then add a CMA800R and go down that route.”

” Suffice to say, with my reference Oppo and Audeze phones; I was not only pleased with the spacious and dynamic sound of the WA8, I feel it is at the top of the price category in every way. Bass is deep and well defined, highs equally so, and this amplifier excels at low-level detail resolution. Add that little bit of extra sauce that tubes bring to the party, and the WA8 makes an incredibly non-fatiguing listening station.”
