“Even though the Violectric V281 amp comes with 2 single-ended outputs, it performs best in its balanced mode configuration. The staging becomes wider and three-dimensional with better layering and separation. While the SE output is not average per se, it just lacks a bit of the technical proficiencies that the balanced output adopts. It would therefore be advised to use headphones with an XLR termination to fully capitalise on this amp’s potential. ”

The sound is very well rounded, as is the bountiful number of connections the sturdy, yet space-sensitive chassis holds. It aims to please, and its tight and dynamic recreation of music should supply any full-sized headphone with exactly what it needs to get the job done right. The timbre and tone feel very balanced, as does its frequency response – no abnormalities crept up in any scenario with our time with the device. ”

” found the Hugo TT noticeably punchier and more dynamically authoritative than the Hugo, while rendering vigourous transient events with even greater ‘snap’ and impact. What’s odd about this is that on paper the Hugo TT is no more powerful than the Hugo, though in practice it gives the impression that it is; the TT, for example, offers that elusive quality of sonic ‘grunt’ in spades. Just for the fun of it, I fired up the track ‘Dogman’ from the King’s X album of the same name [Atlantic, CD] and gave the Hugo TT its head as it drove a pair of ENIGMAcoustics Dharma D1000 hybrid dynamic headphones. The result was a gloriously muscular, hard-driving sound that perfectly captured the boisterous exuberance of which this power rock trio is capable—especially so when it came time to reproduce the thunderously powerful low-frequency rumble of Dug Pinnick’s 12-string electric bass. I suspect the Hugo TT’s perceived punch, clout, and dynamic muscle are down to its beefier battery and bank of super capacitors serving up gobs of current on demand.”

“No, the Stax seem to be generally after something else. Some other gestalt. Something deep and lovely and coherently lush — instead of any serious assault on the Temple of Sonica Pyrotechnica, Stax paints sonic tapestries that are far more about unraveling layers of texture and meaning. Either Stax evinces an all-day listenability that is not only addicting, it’s downright intoxicating — and that level of engrossment is something that’s far more difficult to achieve with the King Senns — and just about every other headphone, to be fair”
