” Actual D/A conversion itself is handled by a pair of 32-bit AKM AK4490 “Verita” chips operating in dual-mono mode. AKM’s flagship AK4490 is a fairly recent design, having just been launched within the past couple of years, and has turned up in some rather interesting gear—upscale kit such as Lindemann’s Musicbook 15, the top dog AK380 DAP from Astell&Kern, and the new Esoteric N-05 DAC/streamer. It also appears in the less extreme Teac UD-503 which is priced identically to the Cayin offering.”

PASS LABS HPA-1 HEADPHONE AMPLIFIER REVIEW

” The Frequency vs. Output indicated that the HPA-1 was capable of outputting 4 volts at clipping (1% THD+N), and its lowest distortion level on the spectrum was 0.0038% with 200 mV output on the spectrum curve. Note that the maximum output will depend on the nominal impedance of your headphones, which varies widely, much more than with speakers.”

Matrix Audio HPA-2C Desktop Amp/DAC Combo Review

” This as an amp on its own tries not to add too much flavour, it is powerful and balanced, well refined and ever so slightly smooth. It takes the slightly sharp edge off the sound which makes it an enjoyable listen. It may not be the flattest in terms of overall sound, but it is also not as smooth as a valve amp at the same price. It works wonders with Beyerdynamic T1 1st Generation as it takes the edge off the slight sharpness in the treble without taking away the detailed nature of the headphones. The sound is articulate and extended on both ends, with the FA-003ti you get the great separation and soundstage, along with the very tight and detailed sound, but the amp adds a little warmth and adds a little something that makes them sound tonally correct.”

Heron 5 Amplifier Review

” A true revelation was the ability to listen to the Rolling Stones on my HD800, any track, off of any of their albums, yes they remained poorly recorded, no “silk purses out of sow’s ears” (I was due a cliché). This is just place where my LCD-3f had always been my first choice, by a wide margin (yes the Audeze bass still makes them the first choice, just less so). The Heron 5 added warmth and bass punch as compared to the Taurus Mk.2 and was huge plus with less than stellar recordings with the HD800 and the Ether C’s that I listened to briefly at the Music City Meet. Several of the Ether C owners reported that the Airist Heron 5, in my setup, was the best that they had heard these headphones sound.

SCHIIT AUDIO HEADPHONE/INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER REVIEW

May 29, 2016 Comments Off on SCHIIT AUDIO HEADPHONE/INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER REVIEW

” The Abyss headphone is capable of delivering all of these things, but only—in my experience—when pushed by true top-tier components (merely good gear simply isn’t good enough to elicit optimal performance from the AB-1266 headphones). But the Schiit components more than rose to the occasion; in fact, they helped my AB-1266s sound better than I have ever heard them sound in my home. Their power and control on the low percussion section was almost frightening, while their burnished, golden treatment of the brass fanfare was similarly intense, yet beautifully balanced and realistically weighted. But the piece de resistance was their handling of the violin solo, which I noted caught the “light, sunlight-sparkling-on-open-water, dance-like quality of the violin.” The Abyss is capable of great performance, but only when the DAC and amp are up to the task, as the Yggdrasil and Ragnarok plainly are.”

BURSON / SUPREME SOUND LYCAN + OPAMPS REVIEW

May 28, 2016 Comments Off on BURSON / SUPREME SOUND LYCAN + OPAMPS REVIEW

Read Here

” Op-amp rolling is very popular among audiophiles and the Lycan encourages that tradition. The sonic characteristic of the Lycan changes when different op-amps are used. Its open frame design and gold plated DIP socket make op-amp rolling with the Lycan fun and easy. The SS4 op-amp was sent to Nathan and me when it was first launched but up to now I never had the possibility to try it out. The SS5 compared to the Gen 4 SS op-amp requires less voltage and current. That means peak performance can be reached using less power. There is no sonic difference between adopting one unit of dual SS op-amp and 2 units of single SS op-amps. Gen 5’s cascade output stage is the result of over 10 years of research and five generations of designs. According to Burson, its sonic signature is the most refined we ever created. Burson also just launched the V5i just last week but it hasn’t reached us yet.”

Pass HPA-1 Headphone Amplifier $3,500 Review

” Even if you aren’t a headphone enthusiast, but have been shopping for a linestage in the $15,000 range, consider the HPA-1. (Remember, it’s only $3,500…) If you have a minimalist, yet high performance system and can live with two single-ended inputs and a lone single-ended output to your power amplifier, get your hands on an HPA-1 and spend the rest of the money on your system”
