Ampsandsound Kenzie Headphone Amplifier $1500 Review
March 10, 2016 Comments Off on Ampsandsound Kenzie Headphone Amplifier $1500 Review
” Will the ampsandsound Kenzie headphone amp be a great choice for you? I’ve written before that acquiring headphone products can be a “Jane! Stop this crazy thing!” habit. You could stop with any of the excellent lower priced amps and DAC/Amps I’ve reviewed (or choose one of the excellent Astell and Kern players, for example) and be absolutely fine. But we are attracted to this hobby for a reason, and this amp’s worth the extra money, to be sure. Some people will want an amp with more bite and slam than you might find in the Kenzie, especially with electronic and aggressive rock music. I’m listening to Mogwai’s “San Pedro” right now, and couldn’t wish for more, but I can see where some might want more torque in their tunes. I’m hoping that my chum, Michael Mercer, will be able to address this aspect of the Kenzie with greater facility. For me, though, this amp does many, many things exceptionally well, and rewards the listener with consistently fine, highly musical sound. Highly recommended. ”

SIMAUDIO NEO 430HA HEADPHONE AMPLIFIER REVIEW

“here are differences I should say but they depended a bit on the disc I was playing and weren’t enough to say one of these was the better of the others in these regards. Using the AR-1s the 430HA had a just slightly chunky character that I favor, but the solid soundstage is something the others couldn’t match.”

Cypher Labs Sustain84 Headphone Amplifier Review
February 25, 2016 Comments Off on Cypher Labs Sustain84 Headphone Amplifier Review
“The Sustain84 holds its own quite well when compared to more expensive amplifiers such as my Woo Audio 5. Although it doesn’t quite have the same effortless liquidity and micro-detail retrieval, it isn’t too far off and transparency is only slightly less; certainly not noticeable unless you really look for it. The big difference between the two here is in the different sound of the tubes. The ECL84 tubes are warm and dynamic, whereas the Woo’s 300B and 6SN7 tubes provide a softer and more ethereal sound

, especially if the balanced topologies in both are exploited. While the single-ended circuits are excellent, trading up to balanced elevates the performance to exceptional – and I dare say peerless – in this price range. This should not surprise, since both models were designed from inception to run balanced. Schiit are resolute about the superiority of balanced over single-ended when properly implemented and in the context of these components at least I am compelled to concur. I detected improvements in clarity, presence, separation, spaciousness and dynamics each time I replaced a single-ended connection with a balanced one, first between the DAC and amp and then between the amp and headphones. The difference between all single-ended and all balanced was not a trivial one and, in my experience, only the latter allows Gungnir Multibit’s resolution and musical fluidity and Mjolnir 2‘s rich palette of textures and vivid holographics to be fully appreciated.”

VIVA AUDIO EGOISTA 2A3 HEADPHONE AMPLIFIER REVIEW
February 17, 2016 Comments Off on VIVA AUDIO EGOISTA 2A3 HEADPHONE AMPLIFIER REVIEW
“This is the best-sounding headphone amplifier I’ve ever heard.
I say that in much the same spirit that John offered up in his review of the HE-1000 from HiFiMAN. There are headphones that do treble better (Sennheiser HD-800) or bass better (Abyss AB-1266), but none that do both better while at the same time nailing the mids, and while looking quite so awesome doing everything with an aplomb that belies exactly how hard this all is. The Egoista is exactly like that.”

JDS Labs The Element $350 Review
February 15, 2016 Comments Off on JDS Labs The Element $350 Review
” I don’t have anything to complain regarding the soundstage too, it is open and has good positioning, all of these are very well present for 349USD. There are always some space between you and the music, sometimes I will found that there is too much distances (not as forward) between me and the music, it another words, I do found that The Element lacking some of the transparency that I am asking for, it is also not a really clean sounding DAC/Amp, far from being veiled though, but I believe this is what keep it separate from some higher end headphone amplifier.”

Questyle CMA800i DAC/Headphone Amplifier Reviewed

” Lastly, the Questyle has an extremely low noise floor, which helps boost its overall dynamic range. I listened to Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture (Telarc CD converted to FLAC) and found it to be extremely dynamic and detailed. The background was extremely quiet even through the sensitive RBH in-ear monitors and the Audeze headphones with their extended high-frequency capabilities, which tend to reveal less-than-stellar noise floors.
