” Then again some companies choose to do this by default with the single ended Tektron Head Amp I have using separate channel volume knobs by default, but it is freaking annoying. The other method is my preferred way of controlling these amps and that is using a DAC that doubles up with pre amp functionality and of course has XLRs out the you can set the Questyle’s to max volume purely as power amps and the attenuate the volume on the DAC. Honestly this is the best method and every one of the last ten or so DACs I have reviewed double as pre amps, even the cheaper ones so is not a hardship to find. I personally use my totaldac d1-tube-mk and its gives me tight volume control even with lower impedance cans, which is handy due to the high gain of the CMA800R.”

For starters, one had to be tolerant of the subminiature tube’s possible microphonics; it didn’t play well with low impedance IEMs (that demand an amplifier with lower noise floor and of lower output impedance than the Vali’s 6.5 Ohms); no gain switching; no pre-amplifier outputs; no tube rolling. (Tube rolling is often one of the key attractions of owning a tube amplifier).”

Compared to the Mjolnir and Ragnarok, which sound sharper and snappier, the Heron 5 instead offers a more liquid like of tonality. I really like it and I’ve found myself regretting heavily selling my HD800 a few months ago. Damn. I shouldn’t have done that, so I’ve asked a friend for a loaner.”

“As a reviewer, this easy transparency is crucial. I don’t want an amp that has any character at all. When I compare headphones, I want to compare the headphones, not the interaction between the headphones and the amp. After checking out the measurements and the sub-1 Ohm output impedance, it’s pretty easy to conclude this amp will drive pretty much any headphone without breaking a sweat. Distortion vs. Output Voltage vs. Load Impedance plots (.pdf amp measurement booklet including the 430HA here) show a low-distortion, noise limited plot to 10Vrms output with a 16 Ohm load!!! This thing is a beast”

” I did try out several other sets of headphones with the HA-1. It did a really nice job of driving the Audeze LCD-3s, giving a good sense of power on tap and excising the sluggishness that I’ve experienced with these ‘phones on other amplifiers. The MrSpeakers Alpha Dog Prime headphones were also a decent match, although having re-tuned them for tube amplification not too long ago, I found that in turn they were a little lean with the HA-1. I kept coming back to the PM-1s, though; it’s inescapably obvious that they were designed with the HA-1 in mind, and they mesh so well that I felt the two together were greater than the sum of their parts.”

“What won’t is the m9XX’s power. If you can’t get enough power for your headphones from the m9XX you’re either deaf, or you’ve already broken your headphones. It provides overkill voltage for the DT880/600, the T1, and the HD880 at current-stable levels. You’ll bleed long before high-performance mode runs into IMD.”
